Adam Boulton Career

Adam Boulton Career

Adam Boulton has spent more than four decades in political journalism, from the parliamentary lobby to the launch of Sky News and his current radio and commentary work.

Late 1970s to 1980s: Early roles and the parliamentary lobby

Boulton began with early roles at IPS News and the BBC. He then worked as a journalist in the parliamentary lobby at Westminster.

He became political editor of TV-am, the early morning television franchise, where his colleague was Kay Burley, who later joined Sky News.

During the 1987 general election, he was famously punched by Labour politician Denis Healey on the pavement outside a studio. The incident became one of the more colourful moments of that campaign.

1989: Founding political editor of Sky News

In 1989, Boulton was asked to build the politics team for the launch of Sky News. This began a tenure of 25 years as the channel’s political editor.

He helped introduce live reporting, reaction, and analysis in real time, at a point when rolling news was still new in Britain.

2008 to 2009: Bush interview and Washington posting

On June 15, 2008, Boulton became the first British television reporter to conduct a joint interview with US President George W Bush and his wife, Laura Bush.

From January 2009, he was based in Washington to cover the first 100 days of Barack Obama’s presidency for Sky News.

2010: Moderating the leaders’ debate

On April 22, 2010, Boulton hosted Sky News’ leaders’ debate live from Bristol. It was the second of three televised debates between Gordon Brown, David Cameron, and Nick Clegg.

The programme is often cited as one of the most watched in Sky News history.

2011 to 2014: Boulton and Co

From 2011 to 2014, Boulton presented Boulton and Co, a regular weekday news and politics programme on Sky News.

2014: Editor at large

In 2014, Boulton stepped down as political editor and became Sky News’ editor at large. He was succeeded in the political editor role by Faisal Islam, and later by Beth Rigby.

2017 onwards: All Out Politics

From 2017, Boulton presented All Out Politics on Sky News each weekday morning, along with a review of Prime Minister’s Questions and the Week in Review programme.

2021: Leaving Sky News

On November 10, 2021, Boulton announced he would leave Sky News at the end of that year. He told The Times that the channel’s digital direction was not a strong fit for him.

2022 onwards: Times Radio, TalkTV, and commentary

In April 2022, Boulton joined TalkTV as a regular panellist on The News Desk with Tom Newton Dunn.

He also presents a Sunday programme on Times Radio alongside Kate McCann, and continues as a freelance contributor to Sky News, GB News and Talk. In May 2026, he publicly argued that GB News should lose its broadcasting licence over impartiality concerns.
