In a shocking turn of events, Hardik Pandya, the former captain of the 2022 IPL champions, Gujarat Titans, has made a surprising move to join the Mumbai Indians for the upcoming season. Titans head coach Ashish Nehra recently shed light on the unexpected decision, providing insights into the circumstances surrounding Pandya’s departure.
Pandya, who led the Titans to back-to-back finals in their first two seasons, played a pivotal role in securing the franchise’s maiden title in 2022. The all-rounder’s decision to leave the team that witnessed his rise to captaincy stardom left many in the cricketing world bewildered.
The Mumbai Indians, a five-time IPL champion, managed to secure Pandya’s return by trading Cameron Green to Royal Challengers Bangalore in the trading window ahead of the auction. Pandya, in a surprising twist, was also appointed as the new captain of the Mumbai-based franchise.
Nehra, while addressing the media on JioCinema after the IPL 2024 Auction, expressed that Pandya’s move wasn’t a colossal surprise, considering his history with Mumbai Indians. The coach highlighted Pandya’s desire to return to his former team, and the Titans’ management respected the player’s choice.
“Hardik Pandya has not gone back to a team that has caused a huge surprise. He played for that team for so many years; he showed his desire to go back there. Our management’s nature is such that we think if a player wants to go there, right,” Nehra explained.
Despite the unexpected departure of their former captain, the Titans have already announced Shubman Gill as their captain for the upcoming season. Nehra acknowledged the challenge of replacing someone of Pandya’s caliber but assured that the team did their best in the auction to fill the void left by the star all-rounder.
“He should be happy, and that’s why he has gone there again. Replacing someone like Hardik Pandya is difficult, but we tried our best,” Nehra added.
Nehra pointed out that the Titans have signed players to fulfill the role that Pandya played as an all-rounder for the team. With a squad size of 25 members, the Titans boast the luxury of having notable players like Omarzai and Shahrukh Khan, both identified as promising all-rounders. However, Nehra conceded that it would be challenging to match the talent and experience that Hardik Pandya brought to the team.
“Having the size of 25 members is a luxury. We got a great all-rounder like Omarzai; we also got Shahrukh Khan. But it will be difficult to make up for somebody like Hardik who has that much talent and that much experience. It is what it is. With the resources we have, we will try and do our best,” Nehra concluded.
