Ishan Kishan, the player who keeps wickets and bats, surprised many by not being part of the Indian team for the T20I series. Initially, he opted out of the South Africa Test series due to personal reasons but was said to be available for the T20I squad against Afghanistan. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chose not to include him, selecting Sanju Samson and Jitesh Sharma as wicket-keepers instead. A report sheds light on Ishan’s situation.

According to the Indian Express, Ishan wanted a break from Test matches because sitting on the bench all the time was mentally tiring for him. Later, he was seen partying in Dubai, which did not sit well with the BCCI selectors and team management.

It is also mentioned that Ishan wanted to skip the T20I series against Australia after the ODI World Cup, but his request was denied. He then wished to miss the white-ball series against South Africa, but this request was turned down as well.

Finally, during the Test series against South Africa, the BCCI agreed to let Ishan take a break. He explained that constant travel and not playing had taken a toll on him mentally, and he wanted to spend time with his family. However, he was later spotted celebrating his brother’s birthday in Dubai.

Some argue that it doesn’t matter where the player spends his time during breaks, and Ishan went to Dubai for his brother’s birthday, defending his actions.

As the Afghanistan series is India’s last before the T20 World Cup next year, there are concerns that Ishan might miss the mega event. With Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli returning to T20 cricket, the competition for top-order batting spots has increased. Nevertheless, if Ishan performs well for Mumbai Indians, the selectors might have no choice but to include him in the T20 World Cup squad.
