Jung So-min Early Life and Education

Jung So-min was born Kim Yoon-ji in Seoul, South Korea. She grew up in a family of four, with her parents and a younger brother.
Long before acting, her world was dance. She started dancing at the age of eight, trained in ballet through middle school, and then moved on to Korean traditional dance in high school.
Her parents were not keen on a life in the arts. They opposed her going to an arts high school, so she attended a regular high school instead, sitting through every class and squeezing in dance training on the side.
Even then, she refused to let her grades slip. Korean media later described her as an “akbari”, a fiercely tenacious girl who kept top marks while dancing because she did not want to be the arts student who neglected her studies.
In 2007, as a high school student, she appeared on KBS’s quiz show Golden Bell Challenge and performed a Korean dance on stage. She later explained that she wanted to show her father, who still opposed her dancing, what she could do.
Her turn towards acting happened almost by accident. She signed up for acting lessons only to improve her expression as a dancer, and found herself hooked straight away.
By her final year of school, she had already been accepted into a university dance department through early admission. Then her acting teacher suggested she try the entrance exam for the Korea National University of Arts.
She told only her mother. After the shock wore off, her mother looked into it and agreed, on one condition: she could try for that one school and nothing else. So-min prepared for about a month and sat the exam.
She passed both rounds, and only then confessed to her father. He was furious that mother and daughter had kept it from him and stopped talking to her. The silence ended only when the tuition bill arrived showing zero, because she had been admitted as the top entrant.
Years later, she chose her own stage name, Jung So-min, as a promise to herself of a fresh start as an actress. Its Chinese characters carry the image of a clear, calm pond.
Education
Jung So-min did all her schooling in Seoul. She attended Seoul Yangjae Elementary School and Eungwang Girls’ Middle School, the years when she was training seriously in ballet.
She then went to Neulpureun High School, a regular school rather than an arts school, because her parents did not want her on an arts track. There she studied Korean traditional dance on the side while keeping her grades near the top of her class.
In 2008, she entered the Korea National University of Arts (KNUA), enrolling in the Acting Department of its School of Drama. She was admitted as the top-ranked entrant, which meant her tuition bill came to zero.
Her intake, the KNUA acting class of 2008, is remembered for producing more than one star. Actor Lee Je-hoon, later known for Signal and Taxi Driver, was in the same year as her.
She was still enrolled at KNUA in April 2012. Her exact graduation year is yet to be updated.

Jung So-min Personal Life

Jung So-min has dated in public only once, and since then she has kept her heart well away from the headlines. What she does share freely is her family life, from living with her parents to doting on a baby nephew.
Relationships and Rumoured Boyfriends

Jung So-min is not married and has no confirmed boyfriend as of 2026. Since her only public relationship ended in 2020, neither she nor her agency has confirmed any new romance.
The closest she came to fresh dating headlines was in 2024, with her Love Next Door co-star Jung Hae-in. Their easy chemistry as childhood friends turned lovers, a joint overseas photoshoot and her visit to his Veteran 2 VIP premiere set off rumours.
She said that the rumours never made things awkward between them, and that she was simply happy viewers saw their chemistry as better than she expected. Neither side has ever confirmed a relationship.
Past Relationships

Jung So-min’s only confirmed relationship was with actor and singer Lee Joon. They met on the set of KBS’s family drama My Father Is Strange (2017), where they played a couple, and began dating in October 2017 after filming ended.
The news broke on January 1, 2018, when the pair were reported to have been spotted on a date during his leave from the army. Both sides confirmed it, and the couple stayed together through his entire military service.
On June 26, 2020, both agencies confirmed the couple had broken up after almost three years. Sources said their busy schedules had pulled them apart, and both camps said they would remain supportive colleagues.
Parents
Jung So-min’s parents are private people, and their names are yet to be updated. She is the eldest child, and she has said that being a “K-jangnyeo”, a Korean eldest daughter, made her feel the weight of wanting to fulfil her parents’ hopes.
She still lives with them. In 2021, she admitted she had once moved out to live on her own, only to move back in with her parents later.
Father
Her father is the parent who pushed back hardest against her dreams. He opposed her dancing, opposed an arts high school, and was furious when she secretly sat the acting exam at the Korea National University of Arts.
He stopped speaking to her after learning she had passed, and only softened when her tuition bill arrived at zero. In 2021, she revealed that the two of them stayed awkward with each other for a long time because he had opposed her acting.
Mother
Her mother has been her quiet ally from the start. She tried to support her daughter’s dancing, and she was the only one So-min told before the KNUA exam, giving her permission to try for that one school.
She is also her toughest critic. As a newcomer in 2010, So-min said her biggest wish was to win approval from her mother, who never held back in pointing out flaws in her acting. Her mother’s favourite actor was the late Lee Sun-kyun, so So-min watched every one of his works.
Siblings
Jung So-min has one younger brother, whose name and occupation are yet to be updated. She became an aunt in March 2019, when her nephew Yu-an was born; his prenatal nickname was “Yeolmu”, meaning young radish.

Jung So-min Career

Jung So-min’s career did not explode overnight. It grew role by role, from a wide-eyed newcomer in 2010 to one of Korea’s most trusted leads in romantic comedy, with quiet detours into melodrama, fantasy, film, radio and the stage along the way.
What ties it together is her habit of choosing people she trusts. Directors, writers and screen partners keep coming back to work with her, and many of her biggest hits grew out of those repeat partnerships.
Discovery and Debut (2010)
Jung So-min was still a student at the Korea National University of Arts when she auditioned for SBS’s melodrama Bad Guy. After her second audition went quiet, she gave up and went back to rehearsing a school play, until a call came for a third round.
She took a leave of absence from university and won the role of Hong Mo-ne. The drama starred Kim Nam-gil, Han Ga-in, Oh Yeon-soo and Kim Jae-wook.
Her very next project made her a lead. MBC cast her as the clumsy, cheerful Oh Ha-ni in Playful Kiss (2010), the Korean version of the Japanese manga Itazura na Kiss, opposite Kim Hyun-joong.
The drama drew low ratings at home but became a hit across Asia, and her performances that year earned her Best New Actress for TV at the Korean Culture and Entertainment Awards.
Back to School and Steady Growth (2011 to 2014)
In 2011, she stepped away from screen work to focus on her studies, picking up the New Star Award at the Asia Model Awards along the way. She returned in April 2012 with MBC’s daily sitcom Standby, set inside a fictional broadcasting station.
She played a character also named Jung So-min, a girl from a remote part of Gangwon Province juggling part-time jobs in Seoul. The ensemble featured Ryu Jin, Lee Ki-woo, Ha Seok-jin, Claudia Kim and Im Si-wan, and the role won her Best Newcomer in a Comedy or Sitcom at the 2012 MBC Entertainment Awards.
Later that year, she took a more grown-up turn in JTBC’s Can We Get Married? (2012 to 2013). She played Hye-yoon, a young woman preparing to marry her salaryman boyfriend Jung-hoon (Sung Joon) within 100 days, against the wishes of her strong-willed mother Deul-ja (Lee Mi-sook).
In 2013, she moved from Bloom Entertainment to SM Culture & Contents and starred opposite Kim Ji-seok in the KBS Drama Special Came to Me and Became a Star as Ha-jin. In 2014, she made a cameo in the final episode of MBC’s Miss Korea.
That same year, she joined KBS2′s Big Man as Kang Jin-ah, a spoiled, self-centred heiress who falls for the hero played by Kang Ji-hwan. Lee Da-hee and Choi Daniel completed the main cast.
Film Debut and Leading Roles (2015 to 2016)
Jung So-min made her major big-screen debut in director Lee Byeong-heon’s coming-of-age comedy Twenty (2015). She played So-min, the girl three high school friends all had a crush on, now dating the carefree Chi-ho.
The trio was played by Kim Woo-bin, Lee Jun-ho and Kang Ha-neul, with Lee Yu-bi, Min Hyo-rin and Jung Joo-yeon in support. The same-age cast stayed close long after filming, keeping a group chat going for years.
Also in 2015, she led the horror romance film Alice: Boy from Wonderland as Hye-jung, opposite Hong Jong-hyun. She then took on JTBC’s disaster medical drama D-Day as Jung Ddol-mi, an orthopaedic resident from Busan caught in an earthquake that hit Seoul.
Her biggest comic swing came in December 2016 with The Sound of Your Heart, a slapstick comedy based on a hit webtoon. She played Ae-bong, the girlfriend and later wife of Lee Kwang-soo’s character Jo Seok, with Kim Dae-myung and Kim Byung-ok as the rest of the oddball family.
The show became a hit in China, passing 100 million views on Sohu. She and Lee Kwang-soo won the Best Couple Award at the 2016 KBS Entertainment Awards.
Breakthrough Year (2017)
2017 was the year everything clicked. From March, she starred in KBS2′s long weekend family drama My Father Is Strange as Byun Mi-young.
The cast included Kim Yeong-cheol and Kim Hae-sook as her parents, Lee Yu-ri, Ryu Soo-young, Min Jin-woong and Ryu Hwa-young, plus Lee Joon. Her bright, wobbly but brave Mi-young won over family audiences across the country.
That spring, she also starred in the body swap comedy film Daddy You, Daughter Me as high schooler Won Do-yeon, who swaps bodies with her father, played by Yoon Je-moon. In mid 2017, she left SM Culture & Contents and signed with Jellyfish Entertainment.
Then came the role that defined her. In tvN’s Because This Is My First Life (October to November 2017), she played Yoon Ji-ho, a 30-year-old assistant drama writer who enters a practical contract marriage with her socially awkward landlord, Nam Se-hee (Lee Min-ki).
Directed by Park Joon-hwa, the drama also starred Esom, Kim Ga-eun, Park Byung-eun and Kim Min-seok. Her calm, thoughtful narration of the show’s lines became one of its trademarks, and she sang its soundtrack song “Because You’re Here”.
Melodrama, Film and Radio (2018 to 2019)
In 2018, she made a cameo in the thriller film Golden Slumber starring Gang Dong-won. Out of loyalty to director Park Joon-hwa, she and Lee Min-ki also filmed cameos in episode 10 of tvN’s What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim, with So-min playing the heroine’s young mother.
She then changed gears completely for tvN’s dark melodrama The Smile Has Left Your Eyes (2018). She played Yoo Jin-kang, a warm but strong-willed woman drawn to the dangerous Kim Moo-young, played by Seo In-guk.

That July, she starred in the period comedy film Homme Fatale as Hae-won. Her screen partner was Lee Jun-ho, with Gong Myung, Choi Gwi-hwa and Ye Ji-won in the cast.
In August 2019, she left Jellyfish and joined Blossom Entertainment.

In 2021, she reunited with director Park Joon-hwa for a three-episode cameo in tvN’s My Roommate Is a Gumiho. She appeared in hanbok as the long-lost love of Shin Woo-yeo, played by Jang Ki-yong, and her brief scenes became a talking point online.
That June, she led JTBC’s Monthly Magazine Home as Na Young-won. Kim Ji-seok played her penny-pinching boss, with Jung Gun-joo, Chae Jung-an and Kim Won-hae in support.
Fantasy Epic and Box Office Success (2022 to 2023)
In June 2022, she took on her most physically demanding role yet in tvN’s fantasy epic Alchemy of Souls, written by the Hong sisters and directed by Park Joon-hwa. She played Mu-deok.
Lee Jae-wook played her stubborn student Jang Uk, with Hwang Min-hyun, Shin Seung-ho, Yoo Jun-sang, Oh Na-ra, Yoo In-soo and Arin in the cast. For Part 2, the story moved Naksu into a new body played by Go Youn-jung, and So-min appeared only in a guest role.
That August, she signed with TH Company. In September 2022, she returned to cinemas after three years with the action thriller Project Wolf Hunting, playing detective Lee Da-yeon, alongside Seo In-guk and Jang Dong-yoon.
In early 2023, she made her professional stage debut in the Korean premiere of the play Shakespeare in Love. She played Viola de Lesseps at the Seoul Arts Center’s CJ Towol Theater from January to March, followed by shows at the Sejong Arts Centre in April.
That August, she joined Ieum Hashtag. Then in October, she delivered her biggest box office hit, the romantic comedy Love Reset, directed by Nam Dae-jung.
She played Hong Na-ra, a film producer who, along with her lawyer husband No Jung-yeol (Kang Ha-neul), loses her memory in a car accident just 30 days before their divorce. It was her second film with Kang Ha-neul after Twenty.
Love Reset topped the Korean box office for 11 straight days, crossed 1 million viewers in under 12 days and passed 2 million admissions in November. A Chinese remake was later confirmed, and the role won her Best Actress at the 2024 Golden Cinematography Awards, her first lead actress trophy since her debut.
