Lee Hye-ri was added to a girl group that had already debuted without her, and she walked in with almost no training behind her. She was born on June 9, 1994 (32 years old), in Gwangju, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea.
She is a South Korean actress and singer who spent her early years in the countryside with her grandmother while her mother worked in a factory.
A short stint on the army variety show Real Men in 2014 changed everything. A clip of her pouting at her drill instructor crossed a million views in a single day, and the press started calling her the Nation’s Little Sister.
The next year she played Sung Deok-seon in Reply 1988, then the highest rated drama in Korean cable history, and won Best New Actress at the APAN Star Awards.
She has since moved between romance, fantasy and thriller in My Roommate Is a Gumiho (2021) and Friendly Rivalry (2025).
Her cheerleading film Victory (2024) brought her Best New Actress at the Buil Film Awards.

Lee Hye-ri Early Life and Education

Lee Hye-ri was born in Silchon-myeon, a quiet rural corner of Gwangju in Gyeonggi Province.
Money was tight from the very beginning. For a stretch of her early childhood, it was just Hye-ri, her little sister and their grandmother living together, while her mother spent almost 15 years working in a factory.
The family was forced to move roughly once a year. Those years made her grow up fast. She later admitted that she always felt like the head of the household, and she quietly promised herself she would one day buy her parents a home.
At school, though, she was anything but quiet. She was the first hand up for every question, never missed a turn as class president, and even served as student council president in elementary school.
Her very first dream was to become President of South Korea. That later shifted to news announcer, flight attendant and Korean language teacher, while she also ran track and played football for her school.
Music found her after the family moved to Seoul during her middle school years. She spent three years in her school’s dance club, listening to ballads and R&B and slowly building a wish to perform on stage.
Her break came through a contest where she finished third. Dream T Entertainment spotted her there and signed her while she was still in middle school, with almost no formal training behind her.
Education

Lee Hye-ri began at Samni Elementary School in Gwangju. After the move to Seoul, she transferred from Gyeonghwa Girls’ Middle School to Garak Middle School, where she graduated.
She briefly attended Jamsil Girls’ High School before transferring to the Seoul School of Performing Arts. There she studied in the Applied Music department and graduated in 2013.
In November 2012, in the middle of Girl’s Day promotions, she passed Konkuk University’s early admission for its film major. The acting track she applied to was brutally competitive, with 1,768 applicants chasing just 14 places, a ratio of 126.29 to 1.
She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Film Studies. Her exact graduation year is yet to be updated.

Lee Hye-ri Personal Life

Lee Hye-ri has never been shy on camera, but she is noticeably careful about her love life. Two of her relationships became public through news reports rather than her own announcements, and she has spoken about them only when she felt she had to.
Relationships and Rumored Boyfriends

In July 2025, Lee Hye-ri had been dating dancer Woo-tae (real name Chae Woo-tae) for about a year. According to the report, the two met in Geoje while she rehearsed the routines for her film Victory (2024), where he worked as a choreography teacher.
Her agency, Sublime, said only that it could not confirm matters of the actress’s private life. Neither Hye-ri nor Woo-tae has confirmed the relationship, so it remains a rumour.
Woo-tae is a choreographer who is also known for breaking, house, hip hop and krump. He became a familiar face through Mnet’s Street Man Fighter (2022) as a member of the crew Be Mbitious.
Ryu Jun-yeol (2016 to 2023)

Lee Hye-ri’s longest relationship was with actor Ryu Jun-yeol. The two began dating in late 2016, and their agencies confirmed the romance in August 2017.
They stayed together publicly for around seven years. On November 13, 2023, both sides confirmed the breakup and described the reason as a private matter.
Ryu Jun-yeol made his film debut in the indie drama Socialphobia (2015) and became a household name the same year through Reply 1988. He went on to build a steady screen career with A Taxi Driver (2017), Little Forest (2018), Believer (2018) and the historical thriller The Night Owl (2022).
Tony An (2013)

Her first public relationship came in April 2013, when news broke that she was dating Tony An of the first-generation boy band H.O.T. Her agency confirmed that he had asked her out in March of that year.
The age gap of 16 years drew heavy attention, and his own agency admitted it was worried she might be hurt by the sudden publicity. The couple split after about eight months.
Tony An, born An Seung-ho, debuted with H.O.T. in 1996. After the group broke up, he formed the trio JTL with former bandmates Jang Woo-hyuk and Lee Jae-won, and later ran his own music company, TN Entertainment, and a school uniform business, Skoolooks.
Parents

Lee Hye-ri’s father is Lee Dong-hyeon, who was born in 1971. Her mother’s name has not been publicly disclosed, so that detail is yet to be updated.
Her mother spent nearly 15 years working in a factory, and Hye-ri has said she felt her mother gave up her younger years for the family. In 2014, once she began earning, she moved her parents into a spacious rented home in Songpa, bought her father a luxury car and handed her mother a credit card.
Her grandmother, who raised her in the countryside, passed away during the filming of Reply 1988. Hye-ri later revealed that the scene where Deok-seon learns of her grandmother’s death was shot the very next day, which is why she could not stop crying on camera.
Siblings
Lee Hye-ri has one younger sister, Lee Hye-rim, who was born in 1996. The two grew up side by side with their grandmother, and Hye-rim often pops up in her sister’s YouTube vlogs on shopping trips and casual days out.
Hye-rim runs her own online clothing store. Further details about her are yet to be updated.

Lee Hye-ri Career

Lee Hye-ri’s career has moved in three clear waves. She began as the youngest member of a girl group, turned into the most talked-about variety star of 2014, and then spent the next decade proving she could carry dramas and films on her own.
What makes her story unusual is that almost every leap came with doubters attached. Each time, she answered with the work itself.
Girl’s Day Debut and First Steps (2010 to 2013)

In September 2010, Dream T Entertainment announced Hyeri and Yura as new members of Girl’s Day after Jiin and Jisun left, just two months into the group’s life. She made her stage debut that October on the single album Girl’s Day Party #2, with “Nothing Lasts Forever” as the title track.
Alongside Sojin, Yura and Minah, she served as the group’s youngest member and main dancer. The quartet slowly climbed with “Twinkle” (2011), then broke into the top tier with “Expectation” and “Female President” (2013), followed by “Something” and “Darling” (2014) and “Ring My Bell” (2015).
She also stepped into hosting early. In 2011, she fronted SBS MTV’s music programme The Show alongside Himchan of B.A.P.
Her acting debut came in April 2012 with SBS’s weekend family drama Tasty Life. She played Jang Mi-hyun, the high school student and youngest of four daughters, opposite Im Chae-moo, Yoon Jung-hee, Ryu Hyun-kyung and Yoo Da-in.
The Real Men Moment and Early Dramas (2014 to 2015)
Everything changed in August 2014. Hyeri joined MBC’s Real Men for its first female soldier special, training for four days alongside actresses Kim So-yeon, Ra Mi-ran and Hong Eun-hee, comedian Maeng Seung-ji and speed skater Park Seung-hi.
A brief clip of her sulking playfully at her drill instructor crossed one million YouTube views in a single day, something almost unheard of at the time. The press began calling her the Nation’s Little Sister, and she won Best Female Newcomer at that year’s MBC Entertainment Awards.
The same year, she returned to The Show as host, first with T-ara’s Jiyeon and model Jung Wook, then with Zhou Mi of Super Junior-M. She also co-hosted the 2014 MBC Gayo Daejejeon with Kim Sung-joo, Jun Hyun-moo, Soyou and Lee Yoo-ri.
In December 2014, she joined JTBC’s teen mystery Schoolgirl Detectives as Lee Ye-hee, a club member convinced she is the prettiest girl in school. She shared the screen with Jin Ji-hee, Kang Min-ah, Lee Min-ji and Stephanie Lee, and the cast also included a young Jang Ki-yong.
In January 2015, she took a supporting role in SBS’s Hyde Jekyll, Me as student Min Woo-jung. The romantic comedy starred Hyun Bin as a theme park director with a split personality and Han Ji-min as a circus leader, with Sung Joon as the second male lead.
Reply 1988 and Peak Stardom (2015 to 2016)

When tvN announced in May 2015 that Hyeri would lead Reply 1988, the casting drew loud scepticism. She played Sung Deok-seon, the overlooked middle child of a working-class family in Ssangmun-dong, Seoul.
Her co-stars included Ryu Jun-yeol, Park Bo-gum, Go Kyung-pyo, Lee Dong-hwi, and Ryu Hye-young. Sung Dong-il and Lee Il-hwa played her parents, with Ahn Jae-hong, Choi Sung-won and Kim Sung-kyun rounding out the neighbourhood.
The drama premiered in November 2015 and peaked at 18.8%, at that point the highest rating in Korean cable history. Critics and viewers who had doubted her were won over, and she took home Best New Actress at the 2016 APAN Star Awards.
The success spilled straight into her bank account. Forbes Korea placed her third on its 2016 Power Celebrity list, and by early 2016 she had filmed more than 30 advertisements.
She also kept presenting. In 2016, she hosted the Idol Star Athletics Championships specials and the 15th KBS Entertainment Awards with Lee Hwi-jae and You Hee-yeol.
Building a Screen Career (2016 to 2019)
Her first post Reply lead came in April 2016 with SBS’s Entertainer. She played Jung Geu-rin, opposite Ji Sung and Kang Min-hyuk of CNBLUE, with Chae Jung-an and Gong Myung in supporting roles.
She admitted she felt immense pressure after Reply 1988, but the role still earned her the New Star Award at the 2016 SBS Drama Awards.
From November 2017 to January 2018, she starred in MBC’s fantasy crime comedy Two Cops as rookie reporter Song Ji-an. Jo Jung-suk played detective Cha Dong-tak, whose body is taken over by the spirit of a con man, played by Kim Seon-ho, with Lee Si-eon, Hoya and Moon Ji-in support.
Her big screen debut arrived in September 2018 with the Joseon-era creature film Monstrum, where she played Myung. She led alongside Kim Myung-min, Kim In-kwon and Choi Woo-shik, with Park Hee-soon and Lee Geung-young in key supporting parts.
In October 2019, she appeared in the sports comedy My Punch-Drunk Boxer as Min-ji, opposite Uhm Tae-goo, with Kim Hee-won and Choi Jun-young.
That autumn, she returned to television with tvN’s office drama Miss Lee. She played Lee Seon-shim, a junior clerk who suddenly becomes CEO of a struggling small company, opposite Kim Sang-kyung, Uhm Hyun-kyung and Cha Seo-won.
Behind the scenes, her contract with Dream T Entertainment ended in January 2019. She moved to the newly founded Creative Group ING that April, while Girl’s Day stated that the group had not disbanded.
Lead Roles and Award Wins (2020 to 2022)

After a cameo as actress Lee Hae-ji in tvN’s Record of Youth (2020), she left Amazing Saturday in late 2020 to focus on acting. The decision paid off in May 2021 with My Roommate Is a Gumiho, iQIYI’s first original Korean drama, which also aired on tvN.
She played Lee Dam, a college student who accidentally swallows the bead of a 32 years old gumiho, played by Jang Ki-yong. Kang Han-na, Kim Do-wan and Bae In-hyuk co-starred, and her Reply 1988 castmate Go Kyung-pyo dropped in for a cameo.
The series topped its time slot on premiere and became iQIYI’s most-watched original drama of the year, crossing 100 million views on the platform.
In December 2021, she took on her first historical drama, KBS2′s Moonshine, as Kang Ro-seon. Yoo Seung-ho led as Inspector, with Byeon Woo-seok and Kang Mi-na in support.
In October 2022, she led MBC’s fantasy drama May I Help You? as Baek Dong-ju, a funeral director who can briefly speak to the dead. Lee Jun-young starred opposite her, with Song Duk-ho and Han Dong-hee as the second leads.
That December brought a rare double. She won the Excellence Award for May I Help You? at the MBC Drama Awards on December 30, then won the same honour for Moonshine the next night at the KBS Drama Awards, which she was also co-hosting with Jun Hyun-moo and Jung Yong-hwa.
Film Breakthrough and Reinvention (2023 to 2025)

In 2023, she joined ENA’s girls’ travel show HMLYCP with Miyeon of (G)I-DLE, choreographer Lee Jung, Choi Yena, Kim Chaewon of LE SSERAFIM and comedian Patricia. That March, she was cast in Victory, which was promoted as Korea’s first cheerleading film.
Released in August 2024, Victory followed Chu Pil-seon, a dance-obsessed teenager in 1999 Geoje who starts a cheer club just to get a practice room. Park Se-wan played her best friend, Jo A-ram played a transfer student, and Lee Jung-ha of Moving played goalkeeper.
The film took her to the 23rd New York Asian Film Festival, where she received the Screen International Rising Star Asia Award. In 2025, she won Best New Actress at the Buil Film Awards and earned a Baeksang nomination for the same role.
In June 2024, she also joined Netflix’s mystery variety series Agents of Mystery with comedians Lee Yong-jin and Lee Eun-ji, singer John Park, actor Kim Do-hoon and Karina of aespa. That May, she signed with Sublime, the agency home of Song Kang-ho.
Then came the role that rewrote people’s idea of her. In Friendly Rivalry, released on U+ Mobile TV from February to March 2025 and later on Netflix, she played Yoo Je-yi, the cold and calculating top student at an elite girls’ school.
Chung Su-bin starred as a transfer student, with Kang Hye-won and Oh Woo-ri. Critics praised her sharp turn away from bubbly roles, and she picked up the Popularity Award at the Blue Dragon Series Awards, a Best Actress nomination there, and Best Actor – Female at the 2025 Asia Artist Awards.
Recent and Upcoming Work (2026 onward)
In late 2025, she reunited with the Reply 1988 cast for tvN’s Reply 1988 10th Anniversary special. She also featured on the anniversary OST track “Hyehwa-dong (or Ssangmun-dong)”, released in December 2025 under the Ssangmun-dong Kids name.
From July 13 to August 18, 2026, she starred in ENA and Genie TV’s romantic comedy Dream to You. She played Joo Yi-jae, a weary reporter who once dreamed of directing films, opposite Hwang In-youp as an award-winning director, in their first project together.
On the film side, she has finished the hardboiled action film Night Fever, where she plays A-ri opposite Woo Do-hwan and Jang Dong-gun. Filming began in January 2024, and a release date is yet to be updated.
In April 2026, reports named her as the lead of a Korean remake of the Japanese drama Caution, Hazardous Wife, playing undercover agent turned housewife Jin Ja-young. Na In-woo was reported as her co-star, though her agency first described the project as one she was reviewing.
Hosting, Variety and YouTube

Hyeri’s variety instincts have been as important to her career as her acting. From 2018 to 2020, she was a regular on tvN’s Amazing Saturday alongside Shin Dong-yup, Park Na-rae, Moon Se-yoon, Kim Dong-hyun, Key, Hanhae and Boom.
She also hosted the 2015 Gaon Chart Music Awards with Leeteuk of Super Junior and the 2018 MBC Entertainment Awards with Jun Hyun-moo and Seungri.
In July 2019, she opened her own YouTube channel for vlogs, mukbangs and behind-the-scenes clips. It passed 100,000 subscribers within about a month, and in January 2024 she launched the talk series Hyell’s Club, with Jisoo of BLACKPINK as the first guest.
Advertising and Brand Work

After Reply 1988, she became one of the most sought-after faces in Korean advertising, fronting brands such as Puma, Lotte’s Ghana chocolate, Bohae and Amorepacific’s Happy Bath. The run earned her the media nickname “₩10 billion girl”.
Her campaigns often moved the needle. Reports said 7-Eleven lunch box sales rose 78% and Nongshim ramen sales 50% after her endorsements, and her Albamon job app ads promoting minimum wage awareness earned her a plaque of appreciation from the Ministry of Employment and Labour in March 2015.

Lee Hye-ri Controversies
Lee Hye-ri has never faced a legal scandal, but her quick, unfiltered personality has landed her in a handful of public storms over the years. In almost every case, she or her agency apologised within days.
- The Rising Sun flag T-shirt (2012): During an event rehearsal in 2012, she wore a T-shirt gifted by a fan that carried a Rising Sun flag pattern, a symbol tied to Japan’s wartime imperialism. Her agency first claimed the design was not the flag, which only deepened the backlash, and Hye-ri later issued an official apology.
- Mimicking BEAST at the Melon Music Awards (2014): At the November 2014 ceremony, a clip showed her appearing to imitate Son Dong-woon during BEAST’s acceptance speech and mouthing “popularity?” to bandmate Sojin. She apologised directly to Dong-woon on Twitter, saying she had been overexcited for her seniors and was in fact a big BEAST fan.
- Albamon minimum wage advertisement (2015): In February 2015, a small business federation complained that her Albamon job app ads, which told part-timers to claim the minimum wage, painted employers unfairly. The pushback turned in her favour, and in March 2015 the Ministry of Employment and Labour honoured her with a plaque for promoting minimum wage awareness.
- Remark during an AfreecaTV broadcast (2015): Ahead of Girl’s Day’s “Ring My Bell” comeback, the group appeared on BJ Choi Gun’s live stream, where Hyeri replied informally to viewers who called the broadcast boring. The host later explained that the playful bickering had been staged for laughs and that he failed to manage the chat in real time.
- Promoting her sister’s online shop (2019): On the July 6, 2019 episode of Amazing Saturday, she used her solo camera moment to hold up her sister’s shopping mall name, which quickly topped portal search charts. Her agency apologised on July 8, calling the remark imprudent, and tvN promised to blur the name in reruns and VOD.
- The “How interesting” Instagram post (2024): On March 15, 2024, as reports emerged that her ex Ryu Jun-yeol was dating Han So-hee, Hyeri posted a photo captioned “재밌네” (How interesting) and unfollowed Ryu, sparking speculation that he had moved straight from one relationship to the next. Three days later, she posted a public apology, saying the November 2023 breakup report was accurate, that the two had not been in contact since a final talk after it, and that her reaction came from personal emotion. The aftermath moved fast. Han So-hee confirmed the relationship and apologised to Hyeri, and on March 30, 2024, Han and Ryu announced their breakup after about two weeks, with Han’s agency admitting her online responses had been wrong.
- Legal action against malicious commenters (2025): In January 2025, her agency Sublime announced legal action against users spreading malicious posts and false rumours about her online.
Lee Hye-ri Net Worth

Her biggest earner has been advertising. After Reply 1988, she had filmed more than 30 commercials by early 2016 and reportedly earned over ₩12 billion, about $9 million (₹86 crore), from them, with at least ₩400 million, about $300,000 (₹2.9 crore), for a single six-month contract.
