Rajkummar Rao was born as Raj Kumar Yadav in Gurgaon, Haryana, India. 

He was raised in a large, middle-class joint family alongside two elder siblings and three cousins. 

Rao’s family faced significant financial hardships during his upbringing. At one point, his family struggled so severely to pay his school tuition that his school teachers stepped in to pay his fees for two consecutive years. 

Driven to support his family and pursue his passions, Rao actively engaged in extracurricular activities. 

He trained in martial arts and took up dance. In high school, he earned his very first salary of ₹300 by teaching dance to a seven-year-old girl. 

He used the earnings to buy essential household groceries and a tin of desi ghee, which he noted was a massive luxury for his family at the time. 

At age 11, he even auditioned for the popular dance reality show Boogie Woogie, though he was rejected. 

Education

Rajkummar Rao completed his formal education through a mix of schooling in Gurugram, university in New Delhi, and professional film training in Pune. 

He completed his primary and middle school education at Siddheshwar Mandir School in Gurugram. 

He transferred to Blue Bells Model School for his high school education  (Class XI and XII) specifically to improve his English-speaking skills. It was during his time here that he first began acting in school plays 

He moved to New Delhi at Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College (ARSD)  for higher education and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from a prominent college affiliated with the University of Delhi.

Rajkummar Rao is married to actress Patralekhaa. 

He is known for keeping a relatively low-profile and grounded personal life despite his massive stardom, maintaining close ties to his roots and his long-term partner. 

Wife

Rajkummar Rao’s wife is Patralekhaa, an Indian actress who has worked in Hindi films and streaming projects. 

The couple met in 2010. Rajkummar first saw her in a television commercial and instantly felt he would marry her, while she first noticed his raw performance in his debut film Love Sex Aur Dhokha. 

After dating for 11 years, they married on November 15, 2021. The intimate ceremony took place at The Oberoi Sukhvilas Spa Resort in New Chandigarh, Punjab. 

Their wedding went viral when Rajkummar asked Patralekhaa to apply sindoor (vermilion) to his forehead as well, symbolizing complete equality in their partnership.

Father

Satyapal Yadav (also referred to as Satya Prakash Yadav) was the father of Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao.

He worked as a dedicated government employee in the Haryana Revenue Department. 

He raised his family in a large joint household located in the Prem Nagar area of Gurugram (formerly Gurgaon), Haryana. 

Satyapal Yadav passed away at the age of 60 on September 5, 2019. He had been undergoing medical treatment at the Medanta Hospital in Gurugram for 17 days prior to his passing. His last rites were performed at the Madan Puri cremation ground. 

Rajkummar frequently honors his father on social media on his death anniversaries, noting that his parents’ hard work remains his deepest motivation. 

Mother

Kamlesh Yadav (also referenced as Kamal Yadav) was the mother of Bollywood actor Rajkummar Rao. 

She was a homemaker who raised Rajkummar, his two elder siblings, and three cousins in their large joint family household in Gurugram, Haryana. 

She was immensely supportive of Rajkummar’s choice to pursue acting. He often notes that she was a driving force in his life and took massive pride in his success as an actor. 

Kamlesh Yadav passed away in March 2016 due to a sudden heart attack while Rajkummar was in the middle of shooting his critically acclaimed film Newton in the remote jungles of Chhattisgarh. 

After receiving the news of her passing through Patralekhaa, Rajkummar rushed back home for the final rites but returned to the film set the very next day. He later stated that he kept shooting through his grief because he knew his mother would have wanted him to finish his work. 

Rajkummar inherited a strict spiritual tradition from his mother. He has kept a fast every single Friday since the age of 16 in honor of Santoshi Maa, a practice inspired directly by her.

The actor formally changed his name from Raj Kumar Yadav to Rajkummar Rao in 2014, adding an extra ‘m’ based entirely on his mother’s firm belief in numerology.

During his wedding to Patralekhaa in 2021, the couple created a special holy shrine featuring her photograph to ensure her presence and blessings were part of the ceremony.
