Seohyun is a South Korean singer and actress so polite that she spoke formally to her own bandmates for 17 years, and still buckles her seat belt even in the back seat. She was born on June 28, 1991 (35 years old) in Seoul, South Korea.

She grew up learning piano, violin, and traditional Korean drums. At 16, she debuted in August 2007 as the youngest member of Girls’ Generation.

That calm discipline carried her into the TTS subgroup and her solo EP Don’t Say No (2017), which topped the Gaon Album Chart. On screen, she shone in Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (2016), Time (2018), Jinxed at First (2022), and Song of the Bandits (2023).

She also stepped onto the musical stage in Moon Embracing the Sun and Mamma Mia!, and fought demons beside Ma Dong Seok in Holy Night: Demon Hunters (2025).

Her work earned her Best New Actress at the 2017 MBC Drama Awards for Bad Thief, Good Thief and again at the 2022 KBS Drama Awards. In 2025, The First Night with the Duke won her the Excellence Award at the KBS Drama Awards.

Seohyun Early Life and Education

Seohyun Early Life

Seohyun was born Seo Ju Hyun on June 28, 1991, in Doksan dong, Geumcheon District, Seoul, South Korea. She is the only child in her family.

Music filled her home from the start. Her mother ran a piano school as its chairwoman, so little Ju Hyun learned piano early, along with the violin and traditional Korean drums.

Her parents never pushed her toward fame. Instead, they let her try everything, from horseback riding to skating, and Seohyun later credited that freedom for helping her find her own path.

Her big turn came in fifth grade, when a talent scout spotted her on a subway train. She auditioned at SM Entertainment through the 2003 SM Casting System by singing children’s songs and was accepted as a trainee.

Growing up, she looked up to BoA, S.E.S, and Fin.K.L, admiring how they shared emotions through music. She trained for about five years before her debut in 2007.

Education

Seohyun first studied at Daeyoung High School, the same school as fellow member Yoona. She later transferred to Jeonju Arts High School and graduated in February 2010.

She then joined Dongguk University, where she majored in theater acting. Despite a packed group schedule, she graduated in August 2014 and received an achievement award at the ceremony.

She is so private that in a September 2023 interview with Esquire Korea, she laughed about being “the celebrity Dispatch gave up on.” The outlet once followed her, hoping for a dating scoop, but only found her reading a book alone in a café.

Still, she has admitted she is not a stranger to love. During her 2017 appearance on JTBC’s Knowing Bros, she surprised the cast by revealing that she had dated someone in the past, though she never named the person.

Her most talked about pairing came through MBC’s We Got Married from 2010 to 2011, where she and CNBLUE leader Jung Yong Hwa played a make-believe married couple. Fans lovingly named them the “Sweet Potato Couple,” after her favorite snack.
