Trevor Phillips Career

Trevor kicked off his media journey in 1980 at London Weekend Television (LWT) as a researcher. Thanks to his hard work and talent, he climbed the ranks and became the Head of Current Affairs in 1992. 

During his time there, he produced and hosted The London Programme, a well-known current affairs show. He also worked on Channel 4’s Black on Black, which highlighted stories about Black British life.

Political and Public Service Roles

Trevor didn’t just stick to media, he also got involved in public service. He was Chair of the London Assembly from 2000 to 2001 and again from 2002 to 2003. 

In 2003, Prime Minister Tony Blair appointed him as Chair of the Commission for Racial Equality. Later, in 2007, he became the first Chair of the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) and held that position until 2012.

Return to Broadcasting

After his time in public service, Trevor Phillips returned to broadcasting. In 2021, he stepped in to host Sky News’ Sunday morning political show while Sophy Ridge was on maternity leave, making history as the first Black presenter of a major UK politics program.
