Brian Stewart began his reporting career in 1964 in print journalism. He worked for the Oshawa Times, the Richmond-Twickenham Times in the UK, and The Montreal Gazette between 1964 and 1971.

He joined CBC in 1971 in Montreal, where he hosted the supper-hour current affairs TV program Hourglass

In 1973, he moved to Ottawa as a national reporter and worked as the network’s foreign affairs and military specialist.

In 1982, Stewart became CBC’s foreign correspondent in London. In 1985, he joined NBC as a foreign correspondent in Frankfurt. He returned to Canada in 1987 and became a senior reporter with CBC’s The Journal

The Journal was hosted by Barbara Frum and Mary Lou Finlay in its first season, and later anchored by Barbara Frum. Brian Stewart was also listed among the guest hosts of the program.

During his foreign reporting years, he worked on major international stories and documentaries, including projects with Tony Burman (for example, reports linked to Ethiopia from 1984 to 1985, and Sudan in 1989).

Later, he hosted CBC current affairs shows such as The Magazine and CBC News: Our World. He also worked as a frequent back-up anchor on The National when Peter Mansbridge hosted.

After 40 years as a full-time reporter, he retired in 2009, but he continued to appear on CBC as an analyst and documentary essayist.

Brian Stewart has received several honours for his reporting work.

  • He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada. The Governor General of Canada lists his award date as November 9, 2022, and his investiture date as October 3, 2024. 
  • He has also won major Canadian journalism awards linked to the Gemini Awards. His honours include the Gordon Sinclair Award (Gemini Award for Best Overall Broadcast Journalist) in 1996, and a Gemini win for Best Information Segment in 1994 for Rwanda: Autopsy of a Genocide.
  • Other awards include a Centre for Investigative Journalism Award (1988) for reporting connected to the Air India Flight 182 crash, and it notes that his documentary work has won international recognition, including a UNDA prize at the Monte Carlo Television Festival for Sudan: Children of Darkness (with Tony Burman).
