Early Career — 1997 to 2000

After graduating from Memorial University in 1997, David started his career with the Canadian University Press as the Ottawa Bureau Chief. His articles appeared in several university publications across Canada including the University of British Columbia’s Ubyssey.

He then worked briefly at The Telegram, a well known newspaper based in St. John’s. After that he took up a summer job at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) in St. John’s, which later turned into a full time position.

Provincial Affairs Reporter at CBC Newfoundland — 2000 to 2015

David became the Provincial Affairs Reporter at CBC Newfoundland and Labrador in the year 2000. He served as the lead political reporter for television, radio, and online platforms for nearly 15 years.

During this time he was the lead analyst on the NL Votes election shows in 2003, 2007, and 2011. He built a very strong network of contacts at the provincial legislature and became a trusted voice in Newfoundland politics.

On Point with David Cochrane — 2011 to 2014

In September 2011, David started hosting and producing his own political television show called On Point with David Cochrane on CBC Newfoundland. He also hosted a weekly radio programme called On Point Radio at the same time.

Both shows were fully dedicated to Newfoundland and Labrador politics. The television show went on to win an RTDNA Award, which is one of the top honours in Canadian broadcast journalism.

From February 2015 to June 2016, David worked as a Senior Reporter at CBC Newfoundland. During this time he hosted the NL Votes Election Night broadcast and also moderated the NL Votes Leaders Debate.

In June 2016, David moved to Ottawa and joined the CBC Parliamentary Bureau as a Senior Reporter. This was a major step forward in his career as he was now covering national and international politics.

He reported from 11 countries across four continents and covered Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on international trips including the G7 in Sicily and a visit to the Vatican. During this time he frequently worked alongside fellow CBC parliamentary bureau journalists Catharine Tunney and John Paul Tasker, co-reporting on major political stories.

He played a leading role in CBC’s coverage of the 2019 and 2021 federal elections. He was also central to CBC’s coverage of the federal government’s response to COVID-19 and the trucker convoy that occupied downtown Ottawa in early 2022.

Before being named permanent host, David also served as one of the interim hosts of Power and Politics alongside Catherine Cullen and Terry Milewski after Rosemary Barton departed the show in 2017. Vassy Kapelos was later named the permanent host in March 2018 before leaving in November 2022 to join CTV News.

In February 2023, CBC News officially named David Cochrane as the permanent host of Power and Politics on CBC News Network. This is Canada’s premier daily political show and airs every weekday from 5 to 7 p.m. ET.
