Don Newman is a Canadian broadcast journalist, born on October 28, 1940 (85 years old), in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

He is best known for his long career covering Canadian federal politics. Newman worked for CBC from 1976 to 2009 and later retired after decades in the parliamentary bureau. 

Many viewers remember his on-air greeting, “Welcome to the Broadcast,” which later became the title of his memoir published in 2013.

Newman has received major Canadian honours for his work in journalism, including being appointed to the Order of Canada.

Newman spent portions of his childhood in England, accompanying his father for banking-related postings, where he attended a London private school and participated in daily chapel services for over five years. 

He grew up in Winnipeg’s River Heights neighborhood, engaging in typical activities such as playing hockey on outdoor rinks at the Sir John Franklin Community Club during the mid-1950s.

Don Newman Personal Life

Don Newman has been married twice. 

His first wife was Audrey Ann (also written as Audrey-Ann Taylor in some reports). They had one child, a son named Lincoln (Linc), born in June 1971.

It is known that Lincoln died in 1992 while under anesthesia for dental surgery. After that, Audrey-Ann later died from cancer.

Newman later married Shannon Day in 1998.

Don Newman Career

Don Newman began his career in newspapers and local broadcasting in Western Canada. He worked at the Winnipeg Tribune, then moved into broadcasting at CJAY-TV in Winnipeg and CKCK radio and TV in Regina. 

He later returned to print at the Winnipeg Free Press and then joined The Globe and Mail, working at its Queen’s Park bureau in Toronto and later in the Ottawa parliamentary bureau.

In 1971, he moved back to television with CTV in its parliamentary bureau. From 1972 to 1976, he worked as CTV’s Washington correspondent. 

In 1976, he joined CBC and again served as Washington correspondent until 1979. He later worked as CBC’s western correspondent based in Edmonton before returning to Ottawa’s parliamentary bureau in 1981.

Along with his reporting, Newman became a long-time host of CBC political shows. He hosted This Week in Parliament from 1981 to 1993. The History of Canadian Broadcasting notes that when Parliament was in recess, Newman also hosted a related weekly program called This Week.

The show was produced in Ottawa by Don Hearn and directed by Ray Lachance or Joan Woodward.

In 1989, he began hosting daily political programs on CBC’s 24-hour news channel (then Newsworld), including Capital Report and the weekday politics program commonly listed as CBC News: Politics / Politics. 

He also anchored CBC’s live coverage of major political events, such as elections and key national political meetings.

Along with his on-air work, Newman worked as a producer for “Politics with Don Newman” with Hannah Thibedeau, after joining CBC in 2009.

Don Newman has received several Canadian honours for his work in political journalism.

  • Order of Canada (Member): He was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 1999.
  • Order of Canada (Officer): He was later appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada, awarded November 22, 2019, and invested November 17, 2022.
  • Charles Lynch Award: He was the first recipient of the Charles Lynch Award for coverage of national affairs in 1997.
  • Hyman Solomon Award: He received the 2005 Hyman Solomon Award for public policy journalism.
  • Gordon Sinclair Award: He received the Gordon Sinclair Award from the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television for his contribution to Canadian TV journalism.
