Gloria Macarenko has built one of the longest-running careers in Canadian broadcast news, moving from small-town radio to national television and radio with CBC.

Late 1970s to early 1980s: First steps in radio

As a teenager, Macarenko read the news for CHTK Radio in her hometown of Prince Rupert.

After studying at BCIT, she joined CKWX Radio in Vancouver as a beat reporter for about two years.

During those early radio years, she interviewed then-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and covered the trial of serial killer Clifford Olson.

Mid 1980s: Years abroad

After the Olson trial, Macarenko spent about four years living in Spain and France.

She taught English and studied languages and art history before returning to Canada.

1988 to 1989: Joining CBC Vancouver

She was named interim anchor of the British Columbia CBC newscast in 1988.

In 1989, she returned to Canada full-time and was hired as a news anchor by CBC Television in Vancouver.

1990s: Anchoring the Vancouver newscast

Through the 1990s, Macarenko became a familiar face on CBC Vancouver’s supper-hour television news.

She co-hosted the evening newscast alongside Kevin Evans through the program’s transition to a new format in the mid 1990s.

On September 2, 1998, while guest anchoring The National, she was first to report the crash of SwissAir Flight 111 near Peggy’s Cove, Nova Scotia.

Her five-hour live broadcast became one of the most recognised moments of her career.

2000s: Canada Now and national profile

In the early 2000s, Macarenko co-hosted the British Columbia portion of the national newscast Canada Now.

She continued to anchor local news and take on guest anchor duties for CBC’s national programs.

2010 to 2013: Co-anchoring with Tony Parsons

She co-anchored CBC News Vancouver with Ian Hanomansing until he moved to The National in 2010.

Veteran anchor Tony Parsons then joined her as co-host from April 2010 until his retirement in December 2013.

During this period, she also worked alongside meteorologist Claire Martin and sportscaster Shane Foxman on the supper-hour team.

2014 to 2017: Moving to radio

In 2014, Macarenko began hosting the national CBC Radio One series The Story from Here, featuring interviews and documentaries from across Canada.

She started hosting the British Columbia radio program B.C. Almanac in January 2015.

In 2018, she also hosted the CBC original podcast Killers: J Pod on the Brink, a five-part series about the threats facing British Columbia’s orca population.

2018 to present: On The Coast

In January 2018, Macarenko took over as host of On The Coast, CBC Radio One’s daily afternoon show for Metro Vancouver.
