Gloria Macarenko has built one of the longest-running careers in Canadian broadcast news, moving from small-town radio to national television and radio with CBC.
Late 1970s to early 1980s: First steps in radio
As a teenager, Macarenko read the news for CHTK Radio in her hometown of Prince Rupert.
After studying at BCIT, she joined CKWX Radio in Vancouver as a beat reporter for about two years.
During those early radio years, she interviewed then-Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and covered the trial of serial killer Clifford Olson.
Mid 1980s: Years abroad
After the Olson trial, Macarenko spent about four years living in Spain and France.
She taught English and studied languages and art history before returning to Canada.
