Janet Stewart Career

Janet Stewart has spent more than three decades in Canadian journalism, moving from radio and reporting in Nova Scotia to anchoring one of Manitoba’s most watched newscasts.
1990s: Early career in Nova Scotia
Stewart began her career in television news in 1994. Early on she worked in her home province of Nova Scotia, where she reported and anchored for CBC Radio One, CTV and Global.
During her Halifax years she also hosted a documentary series for CBC Television and worked as an entertainment columnist for CBC Radio.
2001 to 2006: Anchor at CTV Winnipeg (CKY-TV)
In 2001, Stewart moved to Winnipeg and became a news anchor at CKY-TV, the CTV station in the city. She held that role from August 2001 to November 2006.
She anchored roughly two hours of live television a day and became one of the city’s most watched anchors.
She later left because she felt like a talking head and wanted more room to grow.
2007 to 2024: Host of CBC News Winnipeg
Stewart surprised many when she left CTV for CBC, announcing the move on air in November 2006. Her first day on CBC came in early January 2007.
She went on to host CBC News Winnipeg at 5, 5:30 and 6 p.m. on CBC Television. She anchored the supper hour newscast for close to two decades and also helped write and produce the show.
Around 2013 she began hosting Radio Noon on CBC Radio One in Manitoba as well, balancing television and radio duties.
2024 to present: Radio Noon and a new chapter
In April 2024, Stewart announced she would step away from the television broadcast for a year to host Radio Noon on CBC Radio One. She took on the role while colleague Marjorie Dowhos was on maternity leave.
She framed the move as a way to mark 30 years in television news and to learn new broadcasting skills. Fellow journalist Brittany Greenslade then took over the anchor chair at CBC Manitoba News at Six.
Her exact on air assignment for 2026 is best confirmed directly through CBC, as her role has shifted between television and radio.
