Karan Johar Controversy

Karan Johar Controversy

Karan Johar has faced several controversies during his long career, most of them linked to his public profile and industry standing. Here are the main issues that made headlines:

  • Twitter spat with Ram Gopal Varma (2012): After the release of Student of the Year, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma took a sharp dig at Karan on Twitter. He tweeted that if someone made a film called Teacher of the Year based on Karan’s movie, it would become the disaster of the year. Karan did not stay silent and replied that the disaster of the year was Varma’s own territory, adding that no one could ever replace the comfortable place Varma had created for himself there. The public exchange between the two directors quickly went viral and became one of the most talked-about Twitter battles in Bollywood at the time.
  • AIB Roast FIR (2015): Karan Johar found himself in legal trouble after he hosted the AIB Knockout roast show along with actors Ranveer Singh and Arjun Kapoor. The live show, organised by the comedy group All India Bakchod, featured highly offensive jokes and abusive language aimed at the celebrities on stage. Several complaints were filed over the vulgar content, and an FIR was lodged against Karan, Ranveer, and Arjun Kapoor for their participation in the event. The controversy sparked a big debate in India about the limits of comedy and free speech, and the organisers eventually pulled the video down from YouTube.
  • MNS threats over Pakistani actors (2016): Following the Uri attack in September 2016, political parties like the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena and Shiv Sena demanded that Pakistani actors leave India and asked filmmakers to remove them from their projects. Pakistani actors Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan, both associated with Dharma Productions projects, eventually left the country. However, Karan continued to support them on social media, which invited the anger of the MNS. The party openly threatened him and said its workers would beat him up if he continued to work with Pakistani actors. The pressure grew so intense that the release of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil was briefly stalled before it finally reached theatres after peace talks.
  • Nepotism backlash (2020): After the tragic death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput on June 14, 2020, a wave of anger swept across social media against established Bollywood personalities, and Karan Johar became one of the main targets. He was accused by sections of the public of promoting nepotism and favouring star kids over outsiders in his films. His name also appeared in an FIR filed in Bihar against several Bollywood personalities, including Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Salman Khan, and Ekta Kapoor. Karan stayed silent for weeks before finally breaking his silence, and he has repeatedly defended himself by pointing out that his production house has launched many debut directors and outsider talents over the years.
  • 2019 party video row (2020): In September 2020, Karan Johar’s name surfaced in the Bollywood drug probe that began after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death. The NCB arrested Kshitij Prasad, a former employee of Dharmatic Entertainment, the digital arm of Dharma Productions, in connection with the case. Around the same time, news channels began airing a 2019 party video hosted by Karan in which several Bollywood celebrities, including Deepika Padukone, Ranbir Kapoor, Arjun Kapoor, Malaika Arora, Vicky Kaushal, Shahid Kapoor, Zoya Akhtar, and Ayan Mukerji, were seen, and many claims were made that they appeared to be under the influence of drugs. Karan strongly denied hosting any such drug party and issued a statement saying that no narcotics were consumed at the gathering and that the allegations were deeply hurtful to him and his family.
