Basudeo Singh stands as a luminary in the Indian pharmaceutical industry, and at the age of 83, he serves as the executive chairman of Alkem Laboratories, a pharmaceutical giant with a market capitalization exceeding Rs 45,000 crore. His remarkable journey from a professor to a key player in the pharmaceutical sector reflects resilience, entrepreneurship, and transformative success.
Born in Bihar, Basudeo Singh embarked on an entrepreneurial journey that altered the trajectory of his life. Initially working as a professor, he joined forces with his cousin’s brother, Samprada Singh, in 1962 to venture into the pharmaceutical distribution business in their hometown. Their initial success propelled them forward, leading to the decision to establish their pharmaceutical company.
In 1973, armed with a modest capital of Rs 5 lakh, Basudeo and Samprada Singh moved to Mumbai to establish Alkem Laboratories. Balancing their distribution business with the new manufacturing endeavor, Alkem Laboratories achieved a revenue milestone of Rs 10 crore in 1984.
A pivotal moment for the company came with the launch of Taxim, a medication designed to treat various bacterial infections. Taxim made history by becoming the first anti-infective drug to surpass annual sales of Rs 100 crore in India. This marked a turning point, and by 2008, Alkem Laboratories had crossed the Rs 1,000-crore revenue mark.
The company’s growth trajectory continued with strategic acquisitions, including Pharmacor, Ascend Laboratories, Enzene Biosciences, among others. Alkem Laboratories successfully went public with an initial public offering (IPO) in 2015. In 2019, it achieved a significant milestone by crossing the $1 billion revenue mark.
Alkem Laboratories navigated the pharmaceutical landscape adeptly, benefiting from the Trade generics model, especially during the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Trade generics, sold directly through retailers and distributors without physician recommendations, played a crucial role in the company’s success.
