The Miss Universe 2023 pageant held in El Salvador gained attention not just for the winner, Miss Nicaragua Sheynnis Palacios, but also for its more inclusive rules this year. The pageant allowed the participation of married, separated, and divorced women, and was more inclusive of transwomen and plus-size women. Among the contestants who stood out was Miss Nepal Jane Dipika Garrett, a plus-size model, marking the first time a plus-size contestant entered the semi-final stage of the Miss Universe pageant.
Jane Dipika Garrett, a 23-year-old American-born Nepali model and body positivity advocate, stands 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighs 80 kg. She had earlier become the first plus-sized woman to be crowned Miss Nepal earlier in the year. Jane, a nurse by profession, aims to use her platform to raise awareness about hormone imbalances and their potential impact on mental health. Having experienced depression due to polycystic ovarian syndrome, Jane is vocal about her health issues and advocates for body positivity.

Despite not winning the Miss Universe 2023 title or reaching the final, Jane Dipika Garrett’s entry into the top 20 was significant, breaking traditional beauty standards in pageantry. She had already become a crowd favorite at the pageant due to her confident demeanor and the message of body positivity she conveyed.
