Kapil Mohan, the mastermind behind Old Monk, also spearheaded Solan No 1 and Golden Eagle. Old Monk, a cult classic and one of the world’s top-selling rums, held a prominent position on the Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) brand list for many years.

Enduring the test of time, Old Monk emerged victorious, renowned for its smoothness and vanilla flavors. Let’s acquaint you with Kapil Mohan, the retired brigadier whose brilliance led Old Monk to its current glory. Surprisingly, he himself was a teetotaler.

Kapil Mohan, the visionary behind Old Monk, Solan No 1, and Golden Eagle, was also the Chairperson and Managing Director of Mohan Meakin.

In December 1954, Ved Rattan Mohan, son of entrepreneur Narendra Nath Mohan, paid homage to the Benedictine monks he encountered during a trip to Europe. Inspired by this, he created Old Monk – a dark rum matured in oak vats for seven years, infused with a blend of spices.

After Ved Rattan Mohan’s demise, his brother Kapil Mohan propelled the company to new heights. In a time without stable advertising, he strategically relied on word-of-mouth and customer loyalty, firmly believing that once people tasted Old Monk, they would remain loyal.

During his tenure in the Indian Armed Forces, Kapil Mohan received the prestigious Vishisht Seva Medal for his exceptional contributions.

Beyond his military honors, Kapil Mohan was bestowed with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award.

Kapil Mohan also served as a director in several other group companies, including Arthos Breweries Limited, Mohan Rocky Springwater Breweries Limited, Sagar Sugars and Allied Products Limited, R. R. B. Energy Limited, and Solchrome Systems India Limited.

Possessing a Ph.D., Kapil Mohan formerly held the position of managing director at Trade Links Private Limited (1956-1966).

In 2018, Kapil Mohan sadly passed away due to a cardiac arrest, yet his legacy lives on brightly, ensuring Old Monk’s continued prosperity through his lifelong endeavors.

Today, his nephews Hemant Mohan and Vinay Mohan oversee the day-to-day operations of the company.
