Praveen Sood, an IPS officer, is currently holding the position of Director General of Police (DGP) in the state of Karnataka.
Praveen Sood, a 1986 batch IPS officer of the Karnataka cadre, has been appointed as the new Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a two-year term. Prior to this appointment, Sood has been serving as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Karnataka for the past three years.
Praveen Sood, an alumnus of IIT Delhi and a native of Himachal Pradesh, was scheduled to retire in May 2024. However, he has been granted a two-year fixed tenure as the new Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). He will assume office after the completion of the tenure of the current CBI director, Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, on May 25.
Praveen Sood began his career in 1989 as an assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in Mysore. He gained valuable experience serving as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Bellary and Raichur. Later, he was appointed as the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) in Bengaluru city. In 1999, Sood embarked on a foreign deputation and served as a police advisor to the Government of Mauritius for three years. During his time in Mauritius, he collaborated closely with European and American police agencies, further enhancing his expertise.
In addition to his various roles within the police force, Praveen Sood has held important positions in the administrative domain. He served as the Principal Secretary of the Home Department, where he played a crucial role in managing the department’s affairs. He also held the positions of Additional Director General of Police for the Karnataka State Reserve Police and Additional Director General of Police for Administration, overseeing key administrative functions within the police department. Sood’s diverse experience and expertise have contributed to his well-rounded career in law enforcement.

Praveen Sood’s selection as the CBI Director followed a thorough evaluation process conducted by a high-level committee. This committee, consisting of the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice of India, and the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in Lok Sabha, shortlisted three senior IPS officers for the prestigious position. As per the established procedure, the CBI Director is appointed for a fixed tenure of two years, although it can be extended for up to five years. This appointment process ensures a comprehensive and balanced decision-making approach while selecting the leader of the CBI, one of India’s premier investigative agencies.
