Mike Eppel was born and raised in Tillsonburg, Ontario, on a family tobacco farm. His ancestry is German-Hungarian, and his grandfather emigrated from Hungary to Canada in 1928.
He started working in the tobacco harvest at age 12, alongside his father and family. By 16, he had taken his first job in broadcasting at Tillsonburg’s local station, CKOT.

1986 (approx.): Starts in Tillsonburg at CKOT
At 16, Eppel walked into CKOT in Tillsonburg with an idea for a high school radio segment.
Programme Director Doug Cooper instead put him to work on Sunday mornings, reading copy and learning the booth.
He stayed on through high school, balancing on air shifts with farm work.
1990 to 1991: Wingham (CKNX)
After graduating from Ryerson in 1990, Eppel joined CKNX in Wingham, north of London.
The role was a short contract that covered radio and television across a wide rural Ontario region.
1991 to 1992: Rock 95, Barrie
Eppel then moved to Rock 95 in Barrie, where Diana Mader hired him for the news team. He worked afternoons on the FM side alongside Bruce Barker and Jim Richards.
Other voices on staff at the time included Ann Deuce, Don Landry, Dan Shulman, and roommate Ian McLennan. He lived in a condo on Kempenfelt Bay during this period.
1992: The Fan 1430 launch
In the summer of 1992, Eppel joined The Fan 1430 (CJCL) in Toronto as a sportscaster, just as the station flipped to an all-sports format.
He worked alongside Mike Inglis, Stephanie Smyth, Joe Bowen, Bob Durant, Natalie Pujo, Barb DiGiulio, Mike Hogan, and Dan Shulman during the station’s launch.

When Rogers flipped CFTR from top 40 music to all news in June 1993, Eppel joined the new 680 NEWS within days of launch. He was hired by John Hinnon to anchor business coverage.
