If Toronto sports radio had a soundtrack, Peter Gross’s voice would be one of the opening notes.
For nearly five decades, he has been the easygoing, slightly mischievous storyteller in the corner of the Canadian newsroom, the kind of broadcaster who could turn a sports update into a small comedy show.
Peter is a Canadian broadcast journalist and veteran sportscaster, best known as one of the original voices of 680 News in Toronto.
He is also fondly remembered as a colourful staple of CityTV’s CityPulse newsroom from the mid 1970s.
Today, he hosts the popular Down The Stretch podcast on Ontario horse racing.

Peter Gross Career
Peter Gross’s broadcasting career spans nearly five decades of Toronto media, moving across CityTV, CFNY, CFTR, and 680 News, with a strong second act in podcasting.
Mid 1970s: Discovered by Moses Znaimer at CityTV
In the mid 1970s, Peter was working as an out-of-work actor and a Toronto cab driver.
He happened to pick up CityTV founder Moses Znaimer and asked him for a job. That meeting led to his first on-air role at the new Channel 79.
1977 to early 1980s: Sports Director at CityTV
Peter became Sports Director at CityTV in 1977, working on the legendary CityPulse newscast.
He was part of a now legendary CityTV news team that included Gord Martineau, Mark Dailey, Dini Petty, Jim McKenny, Anne Mroczkowski, Jeanne Beker, Bob Hunter, Stephen Lewis, Peter Silverman, JoJo Chintoh, Brian Linehan, and Debbie Van Kiekebelt.
Early 1980s to 1986: “The World According to Gross”
After leaving the sports desk, Peter shifted to a humour and human interest beat on CityPulse.
His offbeat commentary segment was titled “The World According to Gross.”
He became as well known for his social commentary as for his sports coverage. The segment continued on CityPulse through 1986.
1989: CFNY-FM weekends
In 1989, Peter spent time as a weekend voice on Toronto’s CFNY-FM. This shift gave him radio experience that would soon define the rest of his career.
Early 1990s to 2001: Original sportscaster at 680 News
Peter joined CFTR in the early 1990s and became one of the original sports voices when the station relaunched as the all-news 680 News in the summer of 1993.
He worked alongside fellow original team member Mike Eppel, who was part of the same 1993 launch as a markets reporter and later returned as Senior Business Editor in 2004.
In 1997, Paul Cook took over the 680 News morning drive shift, becoming a daily on-air partner for Peter’s sports updates and later rising to Managing Editor and Morning Anchor of the station.
He also worked under news director Dick Smyth, another original 680 News figure.
In 1993, he mentored a young radio journalist, Mike Wilner, who would later become the Toronto Blue Jays radio play-by-play voice.
He also helped an unknown Hazel Mae develop her sports reporting style.
2001 to 2003: Return to CityNews as weather reporter
In 2001, Peter returned to CityNews for a brief stint. He served as a weather reporter and revived his offbeat “The World According to Gross” segment.
2003 to 2019: Long second tenure at 680 News
By early 2007, Peter had rejoined 680 News, with Broadcast Dialogue noting that “the original 680News Sportscaster re-joins that station.”
He spent the next decade and a half reading sports for 680 News and contributing on Sportsnet 590 The FAN, working alongside Paul Cook, Mike Eppel, and a deep newsroom roster, before leaving the station in July 2019.
2019: Departure from 680 News
Peter learned in April 2019 that his time at 680 News was up. He remained on air through July 2019 before officially departing.
His exit ended a roughly 30-year on-and-off association with the Toronto all-news radio station.
2019 to present: Podcast era with TMDS
After 680 News, Peter teamed up with podcaster Mike Boon (Toronto Mike) at TMDS.
In October 2019, he co-launched “Gallagher and Gross Save the World” with longtime broadcaster John Gallagher of CityTV, Q107, TSN, and AM740.
He soon launched his solo project “Down The Stretch,” a weekly podcast covering thoroughbred, standardbred, and quarter horse racing in Ontario.
2021: Launch of “Seniors Moment with Peter Gross”
In March 2021, Peter launched a new TMDS podcast called “Seniors Moment with Peter Gross.”
The weekly show targets listeners in their 60s, 70s, 80s, and beyond. It pairs his sense of humour with stories and interviews aimed at older Canadians.
Other ventures
After leaving the radio, Peter also drove for Uber Eats and DoorDash to supplement his income.
He continues to write and edit for the Down the Stretch newspaper and podcast.
