Varun Alagh began his career with Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), one of India’s biggest consumer goods companies.

He joined in 2007, right after finishing his MBA from XLRI.

His first role was as a Business Leadership Trainee, where he learned how large brands are built and marketed in India.

He quickly moved up the ranks to become an Area Sales Manager in Delhi NCR, handling product sales and distribution.

Later, he worked as a Regional Brand Manager focusing on innovation and product launches across South Asia.

During this time, Varun gained real-world experience in brand development, market research, and customer behavior.

His time at HUL helped him build a strong foundation in sales, brand marketing, and consumer psychology, which later became key to building his own brand.

Short Stint at Diageo (2012)

In 2012, Varun made a career move to Diageo PLC, a leading global alcohol company.

He worked as the Senior Brand Manager for Smirnoff, one of the most recognized vodka brands worldwide.

Though his time here was short, it gave him exposure to premium branding, global marketing strategies, and how to manage products with an international audience.

Leadership Role at Coca-Cola (2013–2016)

Entrepreneurial Leap – Founding Mamaearth (2016–Present)

In late 2016, Varun took a bold step: he left his stable job to become an entrepreneur.

Together with his wife, Ghazal Alagh, he co-founded Mamaearth in 2016 under their parent company Honasa Consumer Pvt. Ltd.

Over time, Honasa expanded its portfolio by acquiring and launching several other brands, including The Derma Co., Aqualogica, Dr. Sheth’s, BBlunt, and Ayuga, strengthening its position in India’s beauty and personal care market.

Launching Mamaearth

The idea for Mamaearth came from a very personal place: their son Agastya had sensitive skin, and they couldn’t find baby products in India that were safe, toxin-free, and natural.

So, they decided to create their own.

From just a few products, Mamaearth grew into a massive brand with over 100 items for skincare, haircare, and baby care.

The brand became especially popular among young parents and health-conscious users.

Here are some major highlights of Mamaearth’s success under Varun’s leadership:

  • Fast growth from a startup to a leading D2C (direct-to-consumer) brand
  • Became India’s first D2C unicorn in 2022 (valued over $1 billion)
  • Launched a successful IPO in 2023, raising ₹1,701 crore
  • Built a loyal customer base with a strong brand story and social mission

Varun’s role as the Chief Dad and “Get Stuff Done” Officer reflects his hands-on style and family-first mindset.
