Hana Gartner is a Canadian investigative journalist and former CBC broadcaster. She was born in 1948 (78 years old) in Prague, then part of Czechoslovakia. 

Gartner is widely known for her work as a host and interviewer on CBC programs, including The Fifth Estate and The National. She began in radio in Montreal in 1970 and joined CBC television in 1974.

Her work earned major industry recognition, including multiple Gemini Awards and a Gordon Sinclair Award for excellence in broadcast journalism.

Griffin is a supportive partner who managed the home with their children, noted as a less common arrangement at the time. Additionally, he was a former film editor.

Her parents were George and Sasha Gartner. They were refugees from Prague, Czechoslovakia.

Hana Gartner Early Career

Hana Gartner started her broadcast career in 1970 as a radio host at CJAD in Montreal. 

In 1975, she moved to CBC television and worked on the program In Good Company, along with Roger Abbott, Don Ferguson, Nancy White, and Gene DiNovi.

In 1976, she became host of CBC Radio’s This Country in the Morning, replacing Judy LaMarsh. 

A year later, she returned to TV in Toronto as a co-host of CBC’s local newscast at CBLT and the daytime public affairs show Take 30. On Take 30, she followed earlier presenters like Adrienne Clarkson and Mary Lou Finlay, and she worked on the program along with co-host Paul Soles, and later Harry Brown.

In 1982, Gartner became a co-host on CBC’s investigative program The Fifth Estate. In 1992, she also worked alongside journalists Julian Sher and Daniel Burke on reporting linked to the Claude Savoie case.

In 1995, she joined CBC’s main nightly news hour as the host of The National’s magazine segment, along with lead anchor Peter Mansbridge.

She returned to The Fifth Estate in 2000 and spent about 35 years at CBC before her retirement in May 2011.
