Linda Olsen is a Canadian broadcast journalist and retired news anchor. She is best known for anchoring Global News at 5 and Global News Hour at 6 on Global Calgary for nearly three decades.

Linda spent close to four decades in Canadian television news. She was recognised with two RTDNA awards for Canada’s Best Newscast and a 2024 Prairie Region Lifetime Achievement Award from RTDNA Canada.

In 2020, St. Mary’s University in Calgary presented her with an Honorary Fellow Award for her community work.

Outside the newsroom, she now hosts The Spotlight Hour with Linda Olsen on QR Calgary radio and serves on the board of the Calgary Children’s Foundation.

Linda Olsen Early Life and Education

Linda Olsen was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. She is a first-generation Canadian of Danish descent and has often described herself as a proud born-and-raised Calgarian who chose to build her entire career in her hometown.

Linda Olsen first attended Mount Royal University from September 1982 to April 1984, where she studied Business Administration and Management, General.

She then enrolled at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) from September 1986 to May 1988. There, she completed Communication and Media Studies and earned an Honors Diploma in CTSR Cinema, Television, Stage, Radio Arts.

Linda Olsen has spent close to four decades in Canadian broadcast news, moving from a first job in Saskatoon to becoming one of Calgary’s most recognised television anchors.

1988: Career Begins at Global Saskatoon

Linda started her broadcasting career at Global Saskatoon in 1988, the same year she graduated with Honours from SAIT.

The station was formerly known as STV, and she worked there as a reporter and weekend anchor.

1988 to 1995: Reporter and Anchor at CTV Calgary

Within six months of joining Global Saskatoon, Linda accepted a reporter and anchor role at CTV Calgary. This move brought her back to her hometown and set the stage for the rest of her career.

1995: Joins Global Calgary

Linda joined Global Calgary in 1995 as a reporter, anchor, and producer. She celebrated 25 years with the station in September 2020.

She worked with longtime co-anchor Gord Gillies for many years, covering major events including the September 11, 2001, attacks and the 2013 Southern Alberta floods, where the two anchored ten hours of live flood coverage on the first day.

1998 to 2013: Host and Producer of Woman of Vision

Linda hosted and produced Global Television’s Woman of Vision series from its inception in Calgary in 1998.

For 15 years, she highlighted the stories of inspirational women in the community with monthly television features and a column in the Calgary Herald.

The series culminated each year with a gala luncheon on International Women’s Day.

Linda later received the Woman of Vision award herself for her commitment to the program.

2017 Onwards: Anchoring Global News at 5 and Hour at 6

After Gord Gillies moved to radio in 2017, Linda continued as the voice of Global News at 5 and Global News Hour at 6.

During this period, she also worked alongside Scott Fee on the supper hour newscast.

2020 to 2024: Co-anchor with Joel Senick

In September 2020, Global Calgary announced Joel Senick as Linda’s official co-anchor on Global News Hour at 6, with Paul Dunphy as weather specialist.

The team anchored Calgary’s flagship evening newscasts together for the next four years.

Linda also anchored the network’s coverage of the 2023 Alberta provincial election, part of the team recognised with a Canadian Screen Award for Best Live News Special.

August 19, 2024: Retirement from Global Calgary Anchor Desk

Linda’s last day anchoring Global News at 5 and Global News Hour at 6 was Monday, August 19, 2024. Corus Entertainment announced the news on July 15, 2024.

She retired after 29 years with Global Calgary and a broadcast career spanning close to four decades.

2025 Onwards: Radio Host of The Spotlight Hour on QR Calgary

Linda continues to work in local media as the host of The Spotlight Hour with Linda Olsen, which airs on QR Calgary every Saturday from 9 to 10 a.m.

The weekly show focuses on the people, places, and stories that make Calgary unique.

Community Work

Linda serves as a board member of the Calgary Children’s Foundation. She has also served on the board of Parks Foundation Calgary and as an honorary board member of Believe in the Gold, a local children’s cancer charity.
