Akhila BS, the daughter of a former government high school headmaster, has achieved a remarkable feat by securing the 760th rank in the 2022 civil services exam. Despite facing a tragic accident in 2000 that resulted in the loss of her right arm below the shoulder, she demonstrated unwavering determination and resilience to succeed.
Following her accident, Akhila sought medical consultation in Germany, but her arm did not fully recover. Undeterred by the setback, she adapted to her new circumstances and learned to perform daily tasks using her left arm. She even honed her skills by writing with her other hand.
Akhila’s academic journey has been exceptional. She achieved excellent grades in her board examinations and later earned an Integrated MA from IIT Madras. Fueled by her passion for public service, she set her sights on civil services and embarked on her preparation journey.
Her road to success was not without challenges. Akhila made three attempts at the UPSC exam before achieving her desired result. While she cleared the prelims on all occasions, cracking the mains proved to be a formidable task. However, her persistence and dedication paid off as she finally succeeded in 2023, securing her place in the coveted list.

In an interview, Akhila expressed her joy and gratitude, acknowledging the support she received from her parents and extended family. Her dream of becoming an IAS officer was kindled by one of her teachers who introduced her to the profession of a collector, inspiring her to pursue the path of public service.
Preparing for the civil services exam demanded immense hard work and endurance. Akhila BS shared that sitting for extended periods and writing continuously posed significant challenges, given her physical condition. Despite the difficulties, she remained focused on her goal, taking coaching in Bangalore and seeking further assistance from an institute in Thiruvananthapuram.
Her success is even more commendable as she overcame physical limitations and adapted to her circumstances, proving that determination and resilience know no bounds.
In the larger context, the 2022 UPSC exam results highlighted a positive trend for women candidates. For the second consecutive year, women secured four out of the first five ranks, showcasing their growing prominence in various services. The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) recommended a total of 933 candidates, comprising 613 men and 320 women, for appointments to different services.
Akhila’s achievement serves as an inspiring testament to the power of perseverance and dedication in pursuing one’s dreams, regardless of the challenges one may face. Her success story will undoubtedly motivate and empower countless others to strive for their aspirations and make a positive impact on society through public service.
