Who is IAS Jagarti Awasthi?
Jagrati Awasthi, a native of Bhopal, achieved an impressive second position in the 2020 UPSC examinations. Her remarkable accomplishment held even more significance as she prepared for the test alone at home during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic. Jagrati holds a B.Tech degree in electrical engineering from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), Bhopal.
Before embarking on her UPSC preparation, Jagrati Awasthi was employed at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), an Indian government-owned engineering and manufacturing company. However, driven by her aspiration to serve as an IAS official, she made the courageous decision to resign from her job and pursue her dreams.
In 2019, Jagrati made her initial attempt at the UPSC exam, dedicating 8 to 10 hours of daily study. Initially, she attended test preparation classes, but during the COVID-19 lockdown, she chose to continue her studies independently from the comfort of her home. Jagrati’s aspirations revolve around fostering progress in rural communities, with a particular focus on empowering the women residing within them.
Jagrati expressed her disbelief at securing the second position overall and ranking first among women, as it exceeded her wildest expectations. However, she maintained an optimistic outlook regarding her chances of success. Her upbringing in a middle-class household played a significant role in shaping her journey and accomplishments.
Jagrati’s father is a teacher at the Homoeopathy College, and in 2016, her mother decided to leave her job to focus on the education of their children. During her UPSC preparation, Jagrati displayed immense discipline by eliminating all distractions, including phones, televisions, and other potential disruptions. She went as far as completely abstaining from using social media to ensure uninterrupted focus on her studies.
