Mahima Datla, an inspiring young business leader, has emerged as the wealthiest woman in the southern states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, according to the IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List 2022. With a staggering net worth of Rs 8,700 crore, Mahima Datla and her family secured the 10th position among the wealthiest individuals in AP and Telangana. Her net worth increased by Rs 1,000 crore compared to the previous year when it stood at Rs 7,700 crore on the 2021 IIFL Wealth Hurun India Rich List.
Mahima Datla, aged 45, serves as the promoter and Managing Director of Biological E Ltd, a renowned pharmaceutical company based in Hyderabad that has been operating for 75 years. As a third-generation leader, Mahima has achieved significant milestones in the field of vaccines. During the coronavirus pandemic, Datla’s company, Biological E, gained widespread attention for successfully developing the Corbevax Covid-19 vaccine.
Initially, Datla had no intention of joining the family business, which was established in 1948 as one of the pioneering pharmaceutical companies responsible for introducing Heparin medicine to India. After completing her business management studies at Webster University in London, Mahima unexpectedly joined Biological E in 2021. Joining the company was not part of her original plan, and she did not anticipate ending up in the family business. However, she decided to stay after graduation, considering it as a valuable addition to her resume. In a recent quote, she mentioned that her decision to stay was motivated by the belief that it would enhance her professional profile.
Following the passing of her father, Vijay Kumar Datla, in 2013, Mahima Datla assumed leadership of Biological E. Under her guidance, the company has emerged as a prominent vaccine supplier to more than 100 countries, delivering over 2 billion doses in the past decade. Their portfolio encompasses seven World Health Organization (WHO) prequalified vaccines, including those for diseases such as measles, tetanus, and rubella. Notably, Biological E is recognized as the largest global producer of tetanus vaccines. Mahima Datla, regarded as a prominent figure in the healthcare sector, actively collaborates with the Indian government to shape public policies pertaining to health.
