Nirmal Kumar Dhara stands in stark contrast to the wealthy MLAs often making headlines for their enormous wealth. He holds the title of India’s least affluent MLA and is referred to as the “poorest” by certain news outlets. His net worth is surprisingly low, amounting to just Rs 1,700 crore.
Nirmal Kumar Dhara is a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and serves as the MLA representing the Indus Assembly constituency in West Bengal. Residing in Kushmuri village within the Bankura district, he is a 39-year-old politician.
His profession is listed as a “Private Tutor,” and he has attained an MA in English from the University of Burdwan. In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly election, Nirmal emerged victorious, defeating All India Trinamool Congress’ Runu Mete by a margin of 7,220 votes.

As per his affidavit, which was uploaded on the Election Commission website, Nirmal Kumar Dhara possesses Rs 1,700 cash in hand. He has declared ‘Nil’ in terms of total income, movable and immovable assets such as bank deposits, investments, savings, insurance policies, vehicles, agricultural and non-agricultural land, and commercial or residential properties. Additionally, he does not have any outstanding loans.
In his affidavit, Dhara identifies with the “Bagdi” caste, which is a scheduled caste in West Bengal. Importantly, he has no criminal cases against him. Nirmal is married to Anuradha Dhara and has a daughter named Anwesha Dhara. Neither he, his spouse, nor his daughter have any declared assets.
