Puthan Neduvakkatt Chenthamaraksha Menon, popularly known as PNC Menon, stands as a testament to the classic rags-to-riches story. At 75 years old, he is recognized as one of the wealthiest Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) globally. Hailing from a modest background in Kerala, Menon faced adversity early on, losing his father at the tender age of 10. Undeterred by challenges, he embarked on a journey that would ultimately lead to the creation of a business empire.

Menon’s entrepreneurial journey began with humble beginnings. A college dropout from Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, he left India armed with just $7, equivalent to approximately Rs 50. Despite the meager start, he harbored dreams of becoming a successful businessman. His initial venture into the business world involved starting an interior decoration business.

In 1976, Menon took a bold step by venturing into Muscat, Oman, with aspirations of making it big. Co-founding his first company, S&T Interiors and Contracting, in 1977, he initiated the business with a loan of around Rs 75,000. The company rapidly gained prominence, establishing itself as a leading entity in Oman by 1984.

The 1990s marked a pivotal turning point for Menon when he identified the burgeoning potential of the real estate and construction sector. Seizing the opportunity, he founded Sobha Developers in India in 1995. Sobha Developers, listed on Indian Stock Exchanges, has achieved a market capitalization of nearly Rs 9700 crore, highlighting Menon’s adeptness in steering the company to success.

Beyond the borders of India, Menon extended his influence in the real estate arena through Sobha Realty, which operates in the Middle East. His remarkable vision and leadership skills have left an indelible mark on the industry. Menon played a pivotal role in crafting the interiors of iconic structures such as the Al Bustan Palace and the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Oman.

His contributions to business and society were acknowledged in 2009 when PNC Menon received the prestigious Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Puraskar from the President of India. Today, Menon’s net worth stands at an impressive Rs 15,000 crore ($1.8 billion), solidifying his status as one of the wealthiest NRIs globally.

Sobha Realty, Menon’s flagship company in the Gulf, ranks among the top unlisted real estate firms in the region. The resilience and determination displayed by PNC Menon throughout his entrepreneurial journey serve as an inspiration for aspiring business leaders, showcasing that with vision, hard work, and strategic decisions, one can overcome humble beginnings to achieve extraordinary success.
