One such story dates back to the 1980s when the daughter of an Air Force officer fell in love with a Muslim actor. We’re talking about Aamir Khan and his first wife Reena Dutta. Aamir Khan usually keeps his personal life private, but he once admitted that divorcing Reena was the toughest time for him.
Aamir and Reena got married secretly on April 18, 1986, during the filming of ‘Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak’. Their romance began a year before that when Aamir was 20 and Reena was 18. Their families didn’t agree with their relationship because they belonged to different religions – Reena was Hindu, and Aamir was Muslim. Reena’s father, being an Air Force officer, strongly opposed their marriage.
Eventually, Aamir and Reena married in court when Aamir turned 21, but it caused a huge stir in Reena’s family. Her father was shocked and fell ill upon hearing the news. Aamir’s father welcomed Reena, but it took time for Reena’s family to accept the marriage. Despite the initial struggles, Aamir and Reena were together for 16 years before divorcing in 2002. They have two children, Junaid and Ira.
After the divorce, Reena didn’t remarry, while Aamir married Kiran Rao in 2005. Kiran was an assistant director on his film ‘Lagaan’, and they fell in love during its making. They have a son named Azad Rao Khan. However, in July 2021, Aamir and Kiran announced their separation, intending to co-parent their son Azad.
