Sharmistha Dubey, also known as Shar Dubey, is a distinguished Indian business executive who achieved remarkable success in the United States, much like her IIT classmate, Google CEO Sundar Pichai. She held the position of CEO at Match Group, a prominent online dating company that owns popular apps such as Tinder, Hinge, and OkCupid. Shar Dubey is widely recognized for her exceptional leadership during the challenging times of the Covid-19 pandemic, as well as for her innovative ideas that revitalized the industry.
Hailing from Jamshedpur, Sharmistha Dubey completed her education at Loyola School before graduating from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kharagpur. Interestingly, her classmate at IIT was none other than Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google. Notably, Sharmistha Dubey stood as the sole woman in her entire class at IIT, making her accomplishments even more remarkable.
After her time at IIT, Sharmistha Dubey began her professional journey by working for a steel company in her hometown of Jamshedpur. Through her diligent efforts, she managed to save money for further education and eventually pursued a Master’s degree in the United States. In 1998, she embarked on her career as an engineer at Texas Instruments. Later, in 2006, she joined Match.com, marking a significant milestone in her professional trajectory.

In 2017, she conceived the “Likes You” feature for Tinder, which she successfully integrated into the app’s premium membership offerings. This game-changing addition played a crucial role in propelling Tinder’s popularity to new heights, captivating users, and contributing to its meteoric rise.

In 2017, Sharmistha Dubey was appointed as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Tinder, showcasing her increasing responsibilities within the company. Her exceptional leadership led to her promotion as CEO in March 2020, where she successfully guided the group, valued at $40 billion (over Rs 3 lakh crore), through the challenging pandemic era. Sharmistha Dubey decided to step down from her CEO position in May 2022, but she continues to serve as a valuable member of the group’s board of directors.
