Suchetana Bhattacharya, the daughter of the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, Buddha Deb, has expressed her desire to undergo gender-affirming surgery in order to transition to a male identity.
Suchetana Bhattacharya, the daughter of West Bengal’s former Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, has recently made public her decision to undergo a gender transition. According to reports, she has taken steps to seek legal advice and has reached out to psychiatrists to facilitate the process.
According to India Today, Suchetana Bhattacharya will adopt the name ‘Suchetan’ following the gender-affirming operation. Recent reports indicate that Suchetana attended an LGBTQ workshop where she expressed her identification as a man and expressed her desire to undergo physical transition.
During an interview with India Today, Suchetana Bhattacharya emphasized that her parents or family identity is not of great importance to her. She clarified that her decision to undergo the gender transition is driven by her involvement in the LGBTQ movement and her desire to put an end to the daily social harassment she experiences as a transgender man.

“I am an independent adult, currently 41 years old, and capable of making decisions regarding my own life,” stated Suchetana Bhattacharya. She emphasized the importance of not involving her parents in her decision and expressed that anyone who identifies themselves as a man mentally should be recognized as such. She further explained her desire to align her physical self with her male identity by undergoing the necessary procedures.
According to a report by India Today, Suchetana’s father, Buddha Deb, has been aware of her gender identity since her childhood, and she believes that he will be supportive of her decision. The topic gained attention when LGBTQ activist Suprava Roy shared a picture of Suchetana addressing a symposium on the community’s livelihood on social media.
During the symposium, Suchetana openly identified as a “transman” and expressed that after undergoing gender-affirming surgery, she will adopt the name ‘Suchetan’, as reported by the news agency IANS.
