Nahlah Ayed Career

Nahlah Ayed began her reporting career with The Canadian Press, where she worked as a parliamentary correspondent.

A Radio-Canada International profile also notes that her overseas reporting included covering a Middle East tour with then Prime Minister Jean Chretien while she was with The Canadian Press.

She joined CBC in 2002 on a freelance contract. In 2003, she reported as CBC’s Amman correspondent during the U.S. invasion of Iraq.

From 2004 to 2009, she worked as CBC’s Beirut correspondent and reported across the Middle East, including coverage connected to the 2006 Lebanon War and the 2008 to 2009 Gaza War.

In 2012, she joined CBC’s London bureau and later reported on major European stories, including Russia’s annexation of Crimea and Brexit.

In June 2019, CBC announced she would become the host of Ideas on CBC Radio One, starting in September 2019. She took over from Paul Kennedy.

Ayed is also an author. Her memoir A Thousand Farewells was published in 2012 and was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Literary Awards for non-fiction. In 2024, she published The War We Won Apart.
