Todd van der Heyden began working in media in the late 1990s. 

From 1997 to 2000, he volunteered at Vidéotron’s cable access channel Canal Vox. He also did freelance work for CBC Radio in Montreal and the Toronto Star.

In 2000, he joined CFCF, later known as CTV Montreal, as a news reporter. 

In February 2005, he became a co-anchor of the 6 p.m. weekend newscast, and later also anchored the weekday noon newscast.

In August 2008, he moved into a bigger role on the station’s main evening show. 

Along with veteran anchor Mutsumi Takahashi, Todd became co-anchor of CTV Montreal’s 6 p.m. newscast (CTV Evening News).

On December 2, 2011, it was announced that he would leave CTV Montreal for CTV News Channel in Toronto, where he started in January 2012. 

On CTV News Channel, he anchors CTV News Channel with Todd van der Heyden, airing in the midday and early afternoon on some schedules.

Along with television, he hosts the weekly radio program Viewpoints with Todd van der Heyden as a national news and current affairs show carried across its talk radio markets. 

He has also been known as a Friday presenter on CTV News Channel’s politics program Power Play.

He has frequently worked as a fill-in anchor on CTV’s former morning show Canada AM, and at times on CTV National News.
