Long before swiping right became a daily ritual, Bruce Croxon was quietly wiring Canada for the digital love story.

He is a Canadian entrepreneur, venture capitalist, and television personality, best known as the co-founder of Lavalife and a former Dragon on CBC’s hit show Dragons’ Den.

Croxon was born on January 1, 1960 (66 years old) in Canada. He has spent four decades turning curiosity into capital. His fingerprints sit on some of the country’s boldest digital bets, from the early days of online dating to today’s growth-stage tech start-ups.

As the architect behind Lavalife, he grew the brand to more than two million users and led its sale in 2004 for US$152.5 million to MemberWorks Inc.

Today, Croxon wears many hats. He is a partner at Round13 Capital, a co-host of BNN Bloomberg’s The Disruptors, and the founder of 13th Round, a Toronto boxing gym built to put fight back into the lives of young people.

Bruce Croxon Career

Bruce Croxon Career at BNN

Bruce Croxon has built a long and varied career as a Canadian entrepreneur, investor, and broadcaster.

From building one of Canada’s earliest online dating brands to mentoring tech start-ups, he has remained a central figure in the country’s business scene for nearly four decades.

1987: Co-founds Lavalife (originally Telepersonals)

In 1987, Bruce Croxon co-founded the business that would later become Lavalife, alongside his partners Nick Paine, David Chamandy, and Ed Lum. The company first launched as Telepersonals, a telephone-based dating service.

The idea was simple. Help single people connect through voice-based personals, long before the internet made online dating mainstream.

1990s to 2004: Building Lavalife into a national brand

Through the 1990s, Croxon served as partner, chairman, and CEO of Lavalife. As the internet took off in the mid 1990s, the company moved its operations online and saw rapid growth.

Under his leadership, Lavalife grew to nearly 600 employees, achieved revenue of close to $100 million, and reached more than two million users across Canada and the United States. Croxon also helped Lavalife reach about 97 per cent brand recognition in Canada.

2002: Enters the spa business with Vida

While still running Lavalife, Croxon acquired a high-end spa in Whistler, British Columbia, in 2002.

He later grew it into Vida, a chain of holistic spas on the west coast of Canada.

2004: Leads the sale of Lavalife

In 2004, Bruce Croxon led the sale of Lavalife to MemberWorks Inc. for US$152.5 million.

He stayed on as CEO for a short period after the deal closed before moving on to new ventures.

The sale is still remembered as one of the most successful exits in Canadian digital business history.

2011 to 2013: Joins Dragons’ Den on CBC

In 2011, Croxon joined the cast of CBC’s hit business reality show Dragons’ Den as one of the new Dragons. He appeared on the show through Seasons 6, 7, and 8.

He sat on the panel alongside fellow Dragons Jim Treliving, Kevin O’Leary, Robert Herjavec, David Chilton, and Arlene Dickinson.

During his time on the show, he invested in companies such as Balzac’s Coffee, Custom Tattoo Design, The Carbon Farmer, and EnRICHed Academy.

He left the show in 2013 to focus on his growing venture capital work.

2012: Co-founds Round13 Capital

In 2012, Bruce Croxon co-founded Round13 Capital in Toronto with partners John Eckert and Scott Pelton. The firm is a growth-stage venture capital fund focused on Canadian technology and digital companies.

Through Round 13, he has invested in and mentored a wide range of Canadian start-ups. The firm has since grown to manage hundreds of millions of dollars in capital.

2015 to present: Co-hosts The Disruptors on BNN Bloomberg

Since 2015, Croxon has been a co-host of The Disruptors on BNN Bloomberg, sharing the screen with anchor Amber Kanwar. The weekly show highlights Canadian digital innovators and emerging business trends.
