Neetu Garcha Early Life and Education
Neetu Garcha was born and raised in Penticton, British Columbia. Her family heritage traces back to Punjab, India, and she spent a few of her toddler years living in Punjab before settling back in Canada.
She grew up close to her grandmother, whom she affectionately called Bibi. Her parents are immigrants from India who built their life in the Okanagan.

Neetu Garcha Career
Neetu Garcha has built a career that stretches from a small radio booth in Penticton to the national news desk at Global News in Vancouver.
She is widely known for her accountability journalism and on-the-ground reporting from major global events.
Early Years: Giant FM Penticton
While still a high school student in Penticton, Neetu volunteered with the locally owned country music station Giant FM. She was eventually hired to host a weekend radio show.
As Miss Penticton and a community ambassador, she carried a tape recorder to parades and civic events.
She interviewed mayors and city councillors, sending the audio back to the station for newscasts.
2013: 980 CKNW Vancouver and BCIT
In 2013, while still studying Broadcast Journalism at BCIT, Neetu began working as a producer and anchor at 980 CKNW Newstalk Vancouver. This marked the start of her formal relationship with Corus Entertainment.
During her BCIT years, she also interned at CTV Vancouver and CFJC TV Kamloops, where her first television story aired.
2014 to 2016: Global Okanagan, Kelowna
In 2014, Neetu joined Global Okanagan as an intern and quickly moved into a full reporting and anchoring role. She worked at the Kelowna-based station for about two years.
During this time, she travelled to Haiti in 2015 with the Hamilton-based charity Live Different.
She filed a series of stories about Canadian volunteers and the impact of education on poverty.
2016: Refugee Crisis in Greece
In January 2016, Neetu travelled to the Greek island of Lesvos to cover the European refugee crisis.
She reported on families fleeing Syria, Afghanistan, and Iraq arriving on inflatable rafts.
Her four-part series for Global News included visits to the so-called “life jacket graveyard” and a real graveyard for those who did not survive the crossing. She has called it the proudest moment of her career.
2016 to 2017: Global BC Victoria Bureau
After Global Okanagan, Neetu joined the Vancouver Island bureau of Global BC as a video journalist. She reported on local stories from Victoria before her next move to the Lower Mainland.
2017: Joins Global BC in Vancouver
In 2017, Neetu joined the main Global BC newsroom in Vancouver under News Director Bhupinder Hundal. She worked as a weekday News Hour reporter and later became the weekend anchor of Global News Hour at 6.
She shared the Global BC family with weekday anchors Chris Gailus and Sophie Lui, fellow personalities Coleen Christie and Sonia Deol, and weekend co-anchor Sarah MacDonald.
That same year, she reported almost daily for nearly three weeks during what was then the worst wildfire season in BC history.
2021: Reclaiming Her Name and the Trudeau Interview
In April 2021, Neetu posted a viral video for Global News titled “What’s in a Name?”
In it, she explained her decision to stop anglicizing her Punjabi name on air, returning to the authentic pronunciation Nee thoo G uhr cha.
The same year, she became known nationally for a dogged interview with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
He admonished her for not asking “the right questions,” a moment that highlighted her accountability style.
May 2022: Joins Global National
On May 9, 2022, Neetu officially began her new role as British Columbia Correspondent for Global National. She succeeded Robin Gill, who had left the network after 21 years.
At Global National, she joined a team led by anchor and executive editor Dawna Friesen, who hosts the newscast Mondays to Thursdays, alongside Farah Nasser, who anchors Fridays to Sundays from the Toronto studios.

2022: Papal Visit and Edmonton Hosting
Just before joining Global National, Neetu travelled to Rome to cover the Indigenous delegation meeting with Pope Francis at the Vatican.
The announcement of her new role was made by Ingrid Bakewell, the network’s National Director of Network Programming.
In July 2022, she hosted Global National live from Edmonton during Pope Francis’s visit to Canada.
She filed a series of enterprise stories on residential school survivors and calls for action against the Church.
2023: Wildfire and International Reporting
In 2023, Neetu covered the devastating wildfire season across Alberta, British Columbia, and Maui, where the Lahaina fire killed hundreds.
She also reported from Washington, D.C., and the United Nations headquarters in New York City.
In October 2023, she was on board a Canadian Forces aircraft when it was intercepted in an aggressive manner by a Chinese military jet.
She also reported from U.S. military bases in Japan during Operation NEON.
2024 to 2025: Election Coverage and Continued Reporting
In April 2025, Neetu joined Global News’ Decision Canada federal election coverage.

Neetu was the reporter, producer, and writer of the Crime Beat Season 3 episode titled “Forbidden Love: The Murder of Jassi Sidhu.”
The episode told the story of a newlywed from British Columbia who was attacked and killed during a visit to India.

Neetu has been involved with Live Different, a Hamilton-based charity, with trips to Haiti in 2012, 2015, and 2017.
She also took part in the annual Pihl Law Paddle for Prevention, raising funds for BrainTrust Canada with Global Okanagan colleagues.
