The Malayalam actress is best known for her performances as Eashwari in her first film “Five Star”. Kaniha is currently giving back-to-back hits in the Malayalam film industry with successful films like Bhagyadevatha and Pazhassi Raja.

Kaniha has done her schooling at TVS Matriculation Higher Secondary School, located in her native place Madurai. Later she pursued her Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering from BITS. while studying Kaniha gave her stage performances as a pop singer occasionally.

On 15 June 2008 she got married to Shyam Radhakrishnan brother of Jayashree. Kaniha husband is a US-based software engineer. Later the couple was blessed with their son Sai Rishi born in November 2010.

Career

Kaniha’s career began when Susi Ganesan spotted her on a magazine cover page and from there Susi insisted Kaniha perform the lead role in his second film. Her debut film was “Five Star” produced by Mani Ratnam in 2002. Since she was in college, she completed the shooting of this film during her summer holidays. With time she started receiving more offers and slowly became a popular name in the Malayalam film industry.

A Break

As Kaniha was a college student, she had to complete her graduation so gradually Kaniha turned down all projects and went to complete her graduation. The shocking part was she also rejected offers from people like Shankar, P.C. Sreeram, etc. to pursue her studies. But even before she finished her graduation she completed shooting her Telugu film “Ottessi Chepputunna”, which was her debut in Telugu films. The film was completed during her college vacations.

Returning to films

Soon after graduating Kaniha decided to go to the Tinsel Towns and start filming again. In 2004 the Kannada film “Annavaru” was a remake of Mani Ratnam’s 1991 Tamil film “Thalapathi” in which Kaniha gave a good amount of herself. As now she entered the Kannada film industry, she played a neat, cameo role in Cheran’s Autograph, earning critical acclaim. 

Versatile Actress

With time to prove her versatility in acting with all genres of cinema, she gradually started doing comedy-oriented roles in commercial films like “ Aethiree” along with Madhavan, and Sada. Kaniha was portrayed as a naughty Brahmin girl in this film and the film was directed by K.S. Ravikumar. She returned to the Telugu film industry by playing the leading role in “Dancer” which cast a physically disabled Kutty. When no one was willing to act with a one-legged hero Kutty, Kaniha accepted the offer and did a neat job.

Return to Telugu films

With this, she started accepting more Telugu films to reprise her role in the Telugu remake of Autograph, Naa Autograph, by playing the same role as in the original film. Kaniha proved herself to be an actress to reckon with in the Kannada film “Sye”. 

Biggest Film

In 2006 Kaniha got her biggest project which was directed by K.S. Ravikumar where she shared the screen with Ajith Kumar and Asin. She also won plaudits for her role as a mentally disordered girl in this film. Therefore, after almost two years of gap, Kaniha again got a lead role to play in the Kannada film “Rajakumari opposite Ravichandran. 

After marriage

Soon after her marriage in 2008, Kaniha was supposed to take a break from the film industry but in 2009 she returned to Malayalam cinema with films like Bhagyadevatha starring Jayaram and Narain directed by Sathyan Anthikkad. She also starred in Pazhassi Raja with Mammooty, Sarath Kumar, and Padmapriya along with others. The film was directed by a reputed director Hariharam. Kaniha also won several awards for her performance in the film Bhagyadevatha and the rising adulation of Kahina in the Malayalam film industry saw her signing laudable roles in films like “My Big Father and “Christian Brothers.” The shooting was completed before she took her maternity break.
