Kevin Frankish Career

Kevin Frankish has built one of Canada’s longest morning television careers, moving from a small market camera operator in northern Ontario to the host chair of the country’s top-rated breakfast show.

1983 to 1991: CKVR-TV in Barrie, Ontario

After earning his diploma from Canadore College, Frankish joined CKVR-TV in Barrie in 1983 and stayed for nine years.

It was here that he proposed to his now wife Beth on air, and he began the tradition of ending every broadcast with a signature wink to her.

1991: Joins Citytv Toronto

In 1991, Frankish moved to Citytv Toronto, then a sister station to CKVR. He started as the traffic reporter and steadily climbed into bigger on-air roles.

For many years, he also anchored the overnight CityPulse updates, often working directly from the assignment desk and even controlling the camera himself.

1991 to 2018: Co-host of Breakfast Television, Toronto

He started on Breakfast Television in 1991, while Pugliese joined him much later as co-host Dina Pugliese in 2006, they shared the desk for 12 years.

Earlier in the show’s history, he also worked with hosts and contributors such as Liza Fromer, Jennifer Valentyne, and Frank Ferragine as the morning lineup evolved over the years.

Under his stewardship, Breakfast Television became the number one morning show in Southern Ontario.

He spent 27 years on the show, becoming a household name across the region.

2006: On Air Panic Attack and Mental Health Advocacy

In 2006, while on air, Frankish suffered a panic attack live in the studio. He was later diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Severe Depressive Disorder.

He chose to share his experience with viewers, which made him one of the most public Canadian broadcasters speaking openly about mental health.

2018: Departure from Breakfast Television

In May 2018, parent company Rogers Communications terminated his employment with Citytv. His final episode aired on June 1, 2018.

His farewell, with Dina Pugliese beside him in the studio, became one of the most talked-about moments in Toronto morning television history.

2018 onwards: Teaching, Public Speaking, and Kevin Frankish Media

After leaving Citytv, Frankish became a journalism professor at Seneca College, based at the York University campus.

He also launched Kevin Frankish Media, a content creation company, along with his own YouTube channel.

He continues to host the annual Easter Seals Telethon on CBC Television and serves on the board of directors for St. John Ambulance Ontario Division.

Frankish hosted an afternoon show on 105.9 The Region, where he reunited on air with another former CityTV personality, Ann Rohmer.

He has since stepped away from regular broadcast radio to focus on advocacy work.

2020: Kevin’s Isolators on Facebook Live

During the COVID-19 lockdowns, Frankish pioneered the Kevin’s Isolators Facebook Live series, connecting with audiences from home through interviews and check-ins.

This kept him close to viewers who had grown up watching him on Breakfast Television.

2023: Ontario Shores Centre for Mental Health Sciences
