Anish Kapoor, a renowned artist born in Mumbai, continues to dominate as India’s top living artist in terms of earnings since 2019, according to Hurun’s Art List. His art auctions have generated an impressive turnover of over Rs 257 crore.

In the latest Hurun Art List of 2022, Kapoor’s earnings for the year amounted to Rs 24.67 crore, with his most expensive artwork fetching Rs 5.79 crore. The previous year, 2021, saw his turnover reach Rs 20.6 crore, with his single most expensive work selling for Rs 4.5 crore. Back in 2019, he earned a substantial Rs 44.39 crore, with one of his artworks reaching as high as Rs 6.14 crore. In the peak year of 2018, Kapoor achieved a remarkable turnover of Rs 168.25 crore, with the costliest piece priced at Rs 9.31 crore.

Who is Anish Kapoor?

Anish Kapoor, who was born to an Indian father and an Iraqi mother in Mumbai, had his early education at the prestigious Doon School in Dehradun. He later pursued electrical engineering in Israel before ultimately following his passion and becoming an artist. Settling in the UK, Kapoor honed his skills and gained fame as a celebrated sculptor, creating notable installations and conceptual artworks, including the ArcelorMittal Orbit, which was funded by billionaire Laxmi Mittal.

Throughout his career, Kapoor has earned several accolades, including the Turner Prize in 1991, the Indian civilian honor Padma Bhushan in 2012, and knighthood in 2014. He is happily married to historian Susanne Spicale, originally from Germany, and together they have two children. Kapoor’s residence in London is an opulent mansion spanning 14,500 square feet and is estimated to be worth around $26 million.
