Tamannaah Bhatia made her acting debut as the female lead in the Hindi film Chand Sa Roshan Chehra (2005). Though the film underperformed at the box office, it gave her a valuable first taste of the industry.

In the same year, she entered Telugu cinema with Sree (2005), and in 2006, she crossed over to Tamil cinema with Kedi. None of these early films achieved commercial success, but they gave the young actress the experience and exposure she needed to refine her performances.

Before making her film debut, Tamannaah also appeared in several music albums and television commercials, modelling for brands including Fanta and Chandrika Ayurvedic Soap.

She appeared in Indian Idol winner Abhijeet Sawant’s album single ‘Lafzo Mein’ from the album Aapka Abhijeet (2005), giving her early visibility in the entertainment space.

Breakthrough Years (2007–2010)

The year 2007 proved to be a turning point. With Sekhar Kammula’s Happy Days (Telugu) and Balaji Sakthivel’s Kalloori (Tamil), Tamannaah portrayed college students with warmth and authenticity.

Both films achieved significant box office success and earned her critical acclaim, firmly establishing her as a leading actress in both Telugu and Tamil cinema. Her performance in Kalloori earned her a nomination at the 56th Filmfare Awards South in the Best Tamil Actress category.

This period saw a rapid rise in her profile. In 2008, she starred in the Telugu film Kalidasu, which made a strong impact. In 2009, her work in the Tamil blockbuster Padikkadavan (with Dhanush) received praise, and she went on to star in Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam, which earned critical acclaim.

She made her Bollywood debut with the remake of Himmatwala in 2013, directed by Sajid Khan, followed by Humshakals and Entertainment in 2014. While these Hindi ventures received mixed reviews, they introduced her to a wider Hindi-speaking audience and demonstrated her versatility.

The Baahubali Phenomenon (2015–2017)

Tamannaah’s career reached extraordinary heights in 2015 with S. S. Rajamouli’s magnum opus Baahubali: The Beginning. She portrayed Avanthika, a fierce warrior fighting against oppression, a role that demanded physical rigour, emotional depth, and commanding screen presence.

The film became a watershed moment in Indian cinema. One of the highest-grossing films in Indian film history and Tamannaah’s portrayal earned widespread critical and popular acclaim. The Hindu’s critic Sangeetha Devi Dundoo found her performance ‘impressive’.

She reprised her association with the franchise in Baahubali 2: The Conclusion (2017), which shattered box office records globally. During this period, her roles in Oopiri (Telugu) and Dharma Durai (Tamil) in 2016 also received strong reviews. She also starred in the short film Ranveer Ching Returns, which was very well-received.

“Her warrior-princess role in Baahubali received worldwide recognition for its strength, grace, and visual appeal.”
