Soon after graduating from law school in 1987 Crawford joined the Chicago Tribune as a reporter, where she began covering legal affairs, which took her to the Supreme Court beat in 1994.
In 1997 Crawford worked in a 13-part series on the South a generation after the civil rights movement and won the Tribune’s top reporting award.
