Keri began her career in 1994 as a morning show news writer at CFRN in her hometown of Edmonton, gaining early experience with local news operations.

1994 to 1996: Photojournalist in Red Deer, Alberta

She then moved into the field as a photojournalist based in Red Deer, Alberta.

Keri has often described this period as her unofficial apprenticeship, since she drove to stories on her own, wrote the copy, and shot the visuals.
