Garima Sawhney, the first doctor in her family, pursued gynecology on the advice of her father who believed it would be a successful “ladies’ business.”
Dr. Garima Sawhney, the co-founder of Pristyn Care, started as a successful gynecologist before founding her own clinic. With friends Dr. Vaibhav and Harsimarbir Singh, they expanded into elective surgery to provide quality care at affordable prices.
Pristyn Care was relaunched with a new business model – utilizing idle hospital space for affordable, high-quality treatments. Sequoia Capital invested in the company, which became a unicorn within 3 years of launch with a valuation of $1.4 billion (Rs 11,400 crore).
Dr. Garima Sawhney opted for gynecology as her specialty on the advice of her father, who believed it to be a profitable business venture for women. She is the first doctor in her family.
She drew inspiration for her startup from her experience in the medical field, identifying the pain points of patients. In 2018, Dr Sawhney co-founded Pristyn Care in Gurgaon, providing surgical care with the aid of technology and aiding patients in their recovery.
Pristyn Care mainly focuses on non-emergency surgeries and has over 1.5 million patients across 42 cities. They partner with 800+ hospitals, using their idle operation theaters, and provide their own surgeons, equipment, and clinics. Dr. Sawhney, the co-founder of Pristyn Care, is married to Dr. Vaibhav.
Pristyn Care’s success has led them to target revenue of Rs 1000 crore by FY 2024. In FY 22, they achieved a revenue of Rs 350 crore and are aiming to reach Rs 1000 crore this year. They are projected to become profitable by June 2023.
The company leverages the fact that 60% of hospital revenue comes from their surgeons and that operation theaters and beds have an average occupancy of only 20%. This leaves ample opportunity for the company to collaborate with hospitals.
