A year after beginning his career in the film industry, Kalyan married Nandini in 1997. Things changed when Kalyan began living with his co-star Renu Desai in 2001, and they welcomed their son Akira Nandan in 2004.

Nandini, on the other hand, accused Kalyan of bigamy in June 2007, stating that he had remarried without divorcing her. Kalyan defended himself, claiming he had never married Desai. A court in Visakhapatnam eventually rejected the accusations owing to a lack of evidence.

Following this, Kalyan filed for divorce in Visakhapatnam’s family court in July 2007, claiming that Nandini had abandoned him shortly after their wedding. Nandini’s counsel denied these allegations. Their divorce was formalized in August 2008, with Kalyan paying a one-time payment of 5 crore.

After eight years of living together, Kalyan and Desai married in 2009. Aadya, their daughter, was born in 2010. Their marriage, however, ended in divorce in 2012. Desai subsequently said in a 2018 interview that despite her first misgivings, Kalyan pushed on the divorce. She further stated that Kalyan had turned down her plea to make a public declaration regarding their divorce.

Kalyan’s third marriage was to Russian citizen Anna Lezhneva, whom he met while filming “Teen Maar” in 2011. They married in September 2013, in a Sub-Registrar Office in Hyderabad, in accordance with the Special Marriage Act. Since then, the couple has had two children: a girl called Polena Anjana Pawanova and a son named Mark Shankar Pawanovich.

Acting career

Pawan Kalyan started his acting career in 1996 with his debut film, “Akkada Ammayi Ikkada Abbayi.” The following year, he graced the silver screen in “Gokulamlo Seeta.” However, it was in 1999 that he truly made a mark with “Tholi Prema,” directed by A. Karunakaran. This film not only won the National Award but also clinched six Nandi Awards in the same year.

After his success in “Tholi Prema,” Kalyan ventured into the role of a kickboxer in “Thammudu,” a film released on July 15, 1999, under the direction of P. A. Arun Prasad. In 2000, he teamed up with director Puri Jagannadh for “Badri,” marking Puri’s directorial debut. This collaboration was backed by producer T. Trivikrama Rao and featured music composed by Ramana Gogula.

In 2001, Kalyan delivered another blockbuster with “Kushi,” directed by S. J. Suryah. Interestingly, during this period, he also served as the brand ambassador for Pepsi, while his brother Chiranjeevi was promoting Coca-Cola.

The year 2003 saw Kalyan in a different role as he wrote, directed, and starred in “Johnny,” a film co-starring Renu Desai and produced by Allu Aravind, featuring music by Ramana Gogula.

In 2004, he took on the role of Gudumba Shankar in a film directed by Veera Shankar and produced by his brother Nagendra Babu under Anjana Productions. Kalyan not only scripted and screenplayed the film but also choreographed three songs and action scenes.

2005 marked Kalyan’s collaboration with director A. Karunakaran once again, resulting in “Balu,” a film produced by C. Ashwini Dutt under the Vyjayanthi Movies banner.

In 2006, he worked on “Bangaram,” directed by Tamil director Dharani. In the same year, he announced his second directorial venture, “Satyagrahi,” but the project was eventually shelved. Later in 2006, he appeared in “Annavaram,” directed by Bhimaneni Srinivasa Rao, alongside Asin and Sandhya.

The year 2008 brought the massive success of “Jalsa,” directed by Trivikram Srinivas and produced by Allu Aravind. It set a new record for the highest first-day collection in Telugu film history.

In 2010, he starred in “Puli,” written and directed by S. J. Suryah. Additionally, he announced his role in a movie about Jesus Christ, directed by Singeetam Srinivasa Rao.

2011 saw him in “Teen Maar,” a remake of “Love Aaj Kal,” directed by Jayanth C. Paranjee, and in Vishnuvardhan’s gangster film “Panjaa.”

The year 2012 brought him great success with “Gabbar Singh,” a remake of “Dabangg,” directed by Harish Shankar. It successfully completed 100 days in theaters and became the second highest-grossing Telugu film at that time.

In 2013, Kalyan starred in Trivikram Srinivas’s “Attarintiki Daredi,” which faced piracy issues but still emerged as a blockbuster. It held the record for the highest-grossing film in Tollywood at the time, surpassing “Magadheera.”

Recognizing his influence, a Star India survey ranked Pawan Kalyan as one of the Top 5 Heroes of India in 2014.

In 2015, he appeared in “Gopala Gopala,” a Telugu remake of “OMG – Oh My God!” alongside Venkatesh.

Pawan Kalyan Political Career

Pawan Kalyan entered politics in 2008 as the president of Yuvarajyam, the youth wing of the Praja Rajyam Party, founded by his brother Chiranjeevi. He actively campaigned but didn’t hold any official position.

In 2011, when Chiranjeevi merged his party with Congress, Kalyan took a break, unhappy with the decision. In 2014, he launched his own political party, Jana Sena Party.

Kalyan met with Narendra Modi and supported the TDP-BJP alliance in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana while opposing the Congress. His rallies drew massive crowds.

In 2017, he announced his full-time entry into politics post-film commitments. Kalyan highlighted issues like kidney disease, farmer struggles, land pooling, and mining.

His party contested 140 seats in the 2019 elections, securing one victory. Kalyan also led marches for construction workers and demanded justice in a rape-murder case.

In 2020, he formed an alliance with BJP for the 2024 elections. Pawan Kalyan’s political journey revolves around addressing key social and political issues in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

Pawan Kalyan Controversies

Pawan Kalyan’s Election Campaign Vehicle Controversy

Pawan Kalyan found himself in hot water over his election campaign vehicle called ‘Varahi.’ The olive green vehicle, which he unveiled for his election campaign, drew the attention of Andhra Pradesh Additional Transport Commissioner Prasad Rao.

According to Rao, the use of olive green color for private vehicles is prohibited by the Central Vehicle Act, except for military personnel. Pawan Kalyan’s choice of color for his campaign vehicle raised concerns regarding its legality.

Rao expressed uncertainty about whether Kalyan would retain the same color for the vehicle or make changes. He emphasized that vehicle registration rules are consistent throughout India, and they encompass factors such as vehicle type, body, height, width, and registration location.

Pawan Kalyan’s Call for Inclusivity in Tamil Cinema

Pawan Kalyan recently spoke out about the importance of inclusivity in the Tamil film industry during the pre-release event of his film “Bro.” He expressed concern about alleged guidelines set by the Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI), suggesting that only Tamil artists should work in Tamil films.

Kalyan emphasized the value of embracing talent from different regions to boost the growth of Tamil cinema. He pointed to the Telugu industry as an example, where talents from diverse backgrounds collaborated to create outstanding films. He urged influential figures in the Tamil industry to follow suit and produce globally recognized movies.

In response to the controversy, FEFSI’s general secretary, Swaminathan, denied the existence of such guidelines and dismissed them as baseless rumors. He clarified that FEFSI lacked the authority to prevent actors from working in Tamil films.
