He is best known for a 40+ year career in news, working with major networks like CBC News, CTV, Global, and NBC. He anchored CBC Television’s The National, later worked as a producer on The National, and was also a founding producer and correspondent for CBC’s The Journal.

Kent later moved into federal politics. He served as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Thornhill and was Canada’s Minister of the Environment from 2011 to 2013 in Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government.

Peter Kent began working in journalism in the early 1960s. He started in radio and then moved into television. In 1965, he joined Calgary station CFCN-TV and later worked with major networks such as CBC Television, CTV, Global, and NBC, along with other outlets.

At CBC Television, Kent worked as a producer on The National and later became the program’s main anchor from 1976 to 1978. He took over the anchor role after Lloyd Robertson (anchor from 1970 to 1976) and was later followed by Knowlton Nash (anchor from 1978 to 1988).

Kent returned to CBC in 1982 as a founding producer and correspondent for The Journal. He also served at times as a co-host or guest host. The show’s original hosts were Barbara Frum and Mary Lou Finlay, and other hosts or guest hosts linked with the program include Bill Cameron, Keith Morrison, and Brian Stewart.

He also worked with The Christian Science Monitor’s World Monitor TV news service, where he reported and served as a backup anchor alongside John Hart and John Palmer. 

Later, at Global News, he was the host and anchor of the network’s flagship national newscast, First National, until February 2001. He also co-hosted the business news program MoneyWise.

After broadcasting, Kent entered politics. He served as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Thornhill from 2008 to 2021 and was Canada’s Minister of the Environment from 2011 to 2013.
