Ratna Pathak Shah began her career with theatre. Stage acting shaped her early work and helped her build a clean, controlled acting style. She later became closely linked with Motley, the theatre group run by Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah.

Ratna Pathak Shah made her screen debut in 1983 with Shyam Benegal’s Hindi film Mandi. She played Malti Devi in the film.
