Govinda Early Life and Education

Govinda Early Life

Govinda was born in Virar, a town on the northern edge of Mumbai. He is the youngest of 5 children in his family. His pet name, Chi Chi, means little finger in Punjabi.

His family went through hard financial times before he was born. His father had produced a film that flopped, so the family sold their bungalow on Carter Road in Mumbai and moved to Virar.

Govinda grew up watching his parents struggle, and he often traveled long distances by train for his education and later for his auditions.

As a child, he was drawn to dance and films. After watching the movie Disco Dancer in 1982, he practiced dancing for hours and circulated a promotional VHS cassette to get noticed.

Education

Govinda completed his schooling in Virar and later earned his Bachelor of Commerce degree. His father then suggested that he try a career in films.

Govinda Personal Life

Govinda Personal Life

Govinda is married to Sunita Ahuja. The two tied the knot on March 11, 1987, in a private ceremony, and Govinda kept his marriage a secret for 4 years while his career was rising.

About Sunita Ahuja

Sunita Ahuja (Sunita Munjal) is of half Punjabi and half Nepali background, and she follows the Christian faith.

She has largely stayed away from films and has been seen with Govinda at public events and award shows over the years. She is now preparing for her own acting debut alongside their son Yashvardhan.

How They Met

Govinda met Sunita through his relatives. His uncle Anand Singh introduced him in the film Tan Badan, and it was through that family circle that Sunita, the sister-in-law of his uncle’s family, came close to him. Their courtship was kept quiet because Govinda was just starting his film career.

The Difficult Phase and Patch Up

In recent years, the couple’s marriage went through a difficult and very public phase. It is known that the divorce was followed by public comments from both sides, and Sunita later spoke openly about Govinda’s alleged closeness with his Roopa co-star Komal Rani Swarnkar, which Govinda denied and called part of his professional work.

During this time, Sunita also appeared on the reality show Lock Upp: Sach Ya Sazaa in June 2026, and Govinda came to receive her after her eviction, saying he stood by her through their tough phase. Sunita then said that what happens within the family should remain within the family.

The matter finally turned around on August 19, 2026, when Govinda’s manager Shashi Sinha confirmed that Sunita had withdrawn the divorce petition at the Bandra Family Court.

The manager said there was no separation between the couple and that whatever had happened was now in the past. With the petition withdrawn, the couple appears to have moved past their differences, though the withdrawal itself does not reveal exactly what changed between them.

Past Relationships and Rumours

Before his marriage, Govinda was in a serious relationship with actress Neelam Kothari, and he was also linked to actress Rani Mukerji during his peak years.

More recently, his name has been connected to his Roopa co-star Komal Rani Swarnkar.

Here are the details of all three:

Past Relationship with Neelam Kothari

Neelam Kothari

Govinda met actress Neelam Kothari for the first time on the sets of the film Ilzaam in 1986. He was mesmerised by her personality and developed feelings for her right from their first meeting. The two were cast together in 14 films, which created a strong bond between them. They initially became friends and soon fell in love with each other.

At that time, Govinda was engaged to Sunita Ahuja, whom he had met through one of his relatives. As his career grew busier, his relationship with Sunita went through strain, and in one of their fights over his closeness to Neelam, Govinda called off his engagement with her. He later admitted in an interview that had Sunita not called him after five days and convinced him to reconcile, he would probably have married Neelam.

Govinda wanted to marry Neelam, and his father was also ready to accept her as his daughter-in-law. However, it was Govinda’s mother who made him understand that he had already committed to Sunita and could not ruin her life. Later, Govinda felt that it was only he who wanted marriage, while Neelam was focusing on her career and often took the topic of marriage as a joke.

Govinda then secretly married Sunita in 1987 and hid the marriage from Neelam. When Neelam eventually learned about his marriage, she stopped working with him in films.

Alleged Relationship with Rani Mukerji

Rani Mukerji

Govinda was heavily linked to actress Rani Mukerji during the time they worked together on films in the late 1990s and 2000s, sharing screen space in films like Hadh Kar Di Aapne (2000). Discussions online and archival gossip columns noted an alleged live-in relationship between the two, along with reports that Govinda had gifted Rani an apartment.

It was also reported that a reporter had once caught Govinda in a nightdress in Rani’s room while the film’s cast was shooting at a foreign location, and that his wife Sunita was said to have decided to move out of the house after hearing the rumours. However, Rani Mukerji denied all such rumours when asked; the relationship was never confirmed, and both actors eventually moved on.

Rumored Relationship with Komal Rani Swarnkar (Current)

Komal Rani Swarnkar

Rumors surfaced connecting Govinda to his younger co-star Komal Rani Swarnkar from the upcoming film Roopa. Speculation intensified after the two were spotted visiting Mumbai’s Lalbaugcha Raja pandal together. Govinda has denied the affair rumors, characterizing their bond as purely professional and claiming the controversy is a strategized attempt to damage his public image.

Komal Rani later responded on social media with a cryptic post, while Sunita Ahuja publicly voiced distress over the situation and alleged that Govinda had cheated on her. These remain allegations and relationship rumors, as no independent confirmation of a romantic relationship between Govinda and Komal Rani has been established.

Children

He has one daughter and one son.

Daughter

Tina Ahuja (Narmada Ahuja) is the eldest child, who was born on July 16, 1989. She is an actress and made her Bollywood debut with the film Second Hand Husband in 2015.

Son

Yashvardhan Ahuja is the younger child, who was born on March 1, 1997. He has worked as an assistant director in Bollywood and is preparing for his own career in films.

Govinda and Sunita also had a second daughter who was born prematurely and passed away in infancy, a loss that deeply affected the family.

Parents

Govinda is the son of Aroon (Arun Kumar Ahuja) and Nirmala Devi.

Father

His father, Aroon, also known as Arun Kumar Ahuja, was a film actor and producer. He came to Mumbai in the late 1930s and is best known for appearing in Mehboob Khan’s film Aurat (1940).

After his production venture flopped and the family lost their home, he moved the family to Virar, where Govinda was born.

Mother

His mother, Nirmala Devi, was a singer and actress, known for her Carnatic singing. Govinda was very close to her and considered her his strength. She passed away in 1996, which left him shattered.

Govinda has often said that buying a saree for his mother with his first income remains one of his most treasured memories.

Siblings

Govinda has one brother and three sisters.

Brother

His brother, Kirti Kumar Ahuja, is an actor, film producer, director, and singer. Kirti directed Govinda in the film Ssukh and has sung two songs for him.

After watching Disco Dancer (1982), he practised dancing for hours and circulated a promotional VHS cassette to get noticed. He was soon offered jobs in a fertiliser commercial and an Allwyn ad.

He even auditioned for the role of Abhimanyu in the popular mythological serial Mahabharat, but around the same time, he bagged his first Bollywood project.

His first lead role came in Tan Badan (1986), opposite Khushbu, directed by his uncle Anand Singh. His first release was Ilzaam (1986), followed by Love 86 the same year, and both films emerged as commercial successes.

Between 1987 and 1989, Govinda starred in films of various genres, including the family dramas Khudgarz (1987), Dariya Dil (1988), and Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani (1988), along with the action and drama films Marte Dam Tak (1987), Hatya (1988), Jeete Hain Shaan Se (1988), and Jung Baaz (1989).

He worked with director David Dhawan for the first time in the 1989 action film Taaqatwar and shared the screen with Rajinikanth and Sridevi in Gair Kanooni the same year. By the late 1980s, he was considered one of the top film stars of Bollywood.

In 1990, he starred in the cult classic Awaargi with Anil Kapoor and Meenakshi Sheshadri, along with the successful films Swarg and Maha Sangram, co-starring Vinod Khanna, Aditya Pancholi, and Madhuri Dixit.

Becoming the Comedy King (1992 to 2001)

In 1992, Govinda starred in David Dhawan’s action romantic comedy Shola Aur Shabnam opposite Divya Bharti. His portrayal of a mischievous NCC cadet won huge praise, and the film was the fourth highest-grossing film of 1992.

In 1993, he played a dual role alongside Chunky Panday in Aankhen, which became the highest-grossing film of the year and firmly established Govinda as a comic hero. The song Oh Lal Dupatte Wali from the film remains a symbol of 1990s Indian music.

In 1994, the comedy Raja Babu, opposite Karisma Kapoor and with Shakti Kapoor and Kader Khan, became a super hit, and his chemistry with Shakti Kapoor and Kader Khan is still celebrated.

In 1995, Coolie No. 1, once again with Karisma Kapoor under David Dhawan’s direction, became another super hit and is now regarded as a cult classic.

The same year, he reunited with Amitabh Bachchan for Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, which grossed ₹35.21 crore and even beat Kuch Kuch Hota Hai at the box office on its opening day. Amitabh Bachchan said it was a task to keep up with Govinda’s energy on screen.

In 1999, Haseena Maan Jaayegi, co-starring Sanjay Dutt and Karisma Kapoor, became the fifth highest-grossing Hindi film of the year. And the song What Is Mobile Number became hugely popular.

In June 1999, BBC News Online users voted him the world’s tenth greatest star of stage or screen.

In 2000, he played six different roles in Hadh Kar Di Aapne opposite Rani Mukerji, and in 2001 he teamed up with Sanjay Dutt for the hit buddy comedy Jodi No. 1, which grossed ₹34 crore.

Slump and Entry into Politics (2002 to 2005)

His career faced a setback in the early 2000s after a series of commercially unsuccessful films, including Kyo Kii… Main Jhuth Nahin Bolta and Akhiyon Se Goli Maare.

In 2004, he joined the Indian National Congress and won the Mumbai North seat in the Lok Sabha elections, defeating five-time MP and former Union Minister Ram Naik by about 48,271 votes.

He took a break from films between 2003 and 2005, with only a few delayed releases such as Khullam Khulla Pyaar Karen and Ssukh, which was produced by Govinda and directed by his brother Kirti Kumar.

Comeback and Resurgence (2006 to 2007)

In 2007, he played Raju, a taxi driver, in Nikhil Advani’s ensemble romantic comedy Salaam-e-Ishq, and although the film disappointed at the box office, his performance was widely praised.

His second release of 2007 was David Dhawan’s comedy Partner, co-starring Salman Khan, Lara Dutta, and Katrina Kaif. The film was a super hit and grossed ₹30 crore in India in its opening week, the second-highest domestic opening week gross for an Indian film at that time.

He also appeared in the song Deewangi Deewangi from Om Shanti Om (2007), starring Shah Rukh Khan.

Setbacks and Supporting Roles (2008 to 2019)

In 2008, Money Hai Toh Honey Hai, directed by choreographer Ganesh Acharya, failed at the box office, but Chal Chala Chal performed well, and his performance was praised.

In 2009, he played a lawyer in the hit film Life Partner, and in 2010 he appeared in Mani Ratnam’s Raavan alongside Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, and Vikram, where critics praised his performance in a small role.

Murugadoss’s Holiday with Akshay Kumar and Sonakshi Sinha, played an antagonist in Kill Dil with Ranveer Singh and Parineeti Chopra, and played a superstar in Happy Ending with Saif Ali Khan and Ileana D’Cruz. Although the films were not commercial successes, Govinda’s performances in all three were praised by critics.

In 2015, he became a judge on Zee TV’s reality show Dance India Dance Super Moms.

His home production Aa Gaya Hero (2017), in which he played a cop, was a disaster at the box office, and FryDay (2018) with Varun Sharma also failed. His last theatrical release, Rangeela Raja (2019), in which he played a dual role, was panned by critics and managed to recover only 1% of its budget.

Recent Work (2020 to Present)

Govinda Controversy

Like many long careers in Bollywood, Govinda’s journey has also seen its share of controversies and legal troubles. His personal life, especially his marriage, has also been in the news in recent years.

  • Obscene Song Case in Chhote Sarkar (1997): A case was filed against Govinda in the Pakur district of Jharkhand (then part of Bihar) over the song Ek Chumma Tu Mujhko from the film Chhote Sarkar (1996). The complaint alleged that the song’s lyrics were obscene and defamatory, and charges were registered under IPC Section 294 (obscene acts and songs), Section 500 (punishment for defamation), and Section 502 (sale of defamatory printed matter). Govinda moved the Bombay High Court and said the case was filed only to humiliate and malign his reputation, and that he was just the actor in the film and not the lyricist. In 2017, the Bombay High Court granted him anticipatory bail with a personal bond of ₹25,000 and one surety.
  • Slapping a Struggling Actor (2008): Govinda slapped struggling actor Santosh Rai on the sets of Money Hai Toh Honey Hai at Filmistan Studio in Mumbai. Rai filed a complaint, which eventually reached the Supreme Court after lower courts dismissed it for lack of evidence. In December 2015, the Supreme Court asked Govinda to apologise and settle the matter out of court.
  • Absence from Parliament (2004 to 2008): During his term as Member of Parliament from Mumbai North, Govinda was severely criticised for remaining absent from the Lok Sabha and being inaccessible to his constituents while continuing to act in films. The criticism led him to quit politics on 20 January 2008.
  • Avatar Role Claims (2024): Govinda claimed he was offered Sam Worthington’s role in the 2009 film Avatar and that he suggested its title. He said he refused the role because he did not want to paint his body blue. The claims were widely mocked on social media, and producer Pahlaj Nihalani said Govinda had confused it with his own unfinished Hindi film of the same name.
  • Link to ₹1,000 Crore Ponzi Scam Probe (2023): The Odisha Economic Offences Wing decided to question Govinda in connection with a ₹1,000 crore online ponzi scam linked to Solar Techno Alliance. Officials clarified that he was not involved in the scam but had endorsed the company’s activities in a few promotional videos.
  • Public Rift with Krushna Abhishek (2016 to 2024): Govinda had a public dispute with his nephew, comedian Krushna Abhishek, over a joke made on television and a tweet by Krushna’s wife. The family rift made headlines for years, and in November 2024, Krushna revealed that the two had reconciled and buried the past.
  • Sunita Ahuja Divorce Case and Patch Up (2024 to 2026): Govinda’s marriage came under public scrutiny when reports said Sunita Ahuja had filed a divorce petition at the Bandra Family Court in Mumbai on December 5, 2024, citing adultery, cruelty, and desertion as grounds under the Hindu Marriage Act. The matter intensified in August 2026 after Govinda was seen publicly with his co-star Komal Rani Swarnkar. Sunita alleged that Govinda had cheated on her, while Govinda defended his professional work and asked her to be mindful of her public remarks. These remain allegations, as no independent confirmation of a romantic relationship has been established. On August 19, 2026, Govinda’s manager Shashi Sinha confirmed that Sunita had withdrawn her divorce petition and said there was no separation between the couple.
