Anil Kapoor Early Life and Education
Anil Kapoor was born in Chembur, Mumbai, into a Punjabi Hindu family with deep roots in the film industry — but stardom was nowhere in sight when he was growing up.
Long before the spotlight, young Anil was just another kid in a cramped middle-class household, squeezed into a single room with his entire family, dreaming far bigger than his surroundings ever suggested.
Childhood
Even as a kid, Anil Kapoor was obsessed with the movies. He was that annual Ganesh Utsav regular who never missed a film screening, and his biggest idol was none other than the legendary Raj Kapoor — so much so that he’d often be caught mimicking his mannerisms and swagger.
That obsession even got him his first, if forgettable, taste of the camera: at just 12, he stepped in front of the lens for a film called Tu Payal Mein Geet, playing a young version of Shashi Kapoor’s character. The film never made it to theatres — but the movie bug had already bitten, and it was there to stay.
Education
He completed his primary and secondary education at Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School in Chembur. He later studied at St. Xavier’s College in South Mumbai.
He would commute daily by bus and train from Chembur to the VT (now CSMT) station and walk the remaining distance. However, his growing obsession with films took a toll on his studies: he was eventually expelled in his second year due to poor attendance.

Anil Kapoor Personal Life

Anil Kapoor is married to former model and costume designer Sunita Bhavnani Kapoor. The couple tied the knot on May 19, 1984, and shares a deeply enduring romance spanning decades.
The two first connected over the phone; he fell for her voice before they grew close in person, and their romance began, and they dated for around 11 years before getting married.
Children
Anil and Sunita have three children, all of whom are involved in the entertainment industry.
- Sonam Kapoor: The eldest child (born in 1985) is a prominent Bollywood actress and fashion icon known for her roles in films like Neerja and Khoobsurat. She is married to businessman Anand Ahuja, and they have two children.

Family
Anil Kapoor hails from one of Bollywood’s most prominent families. Anil Kapoor comes from a Punjabi Hindu family affiliated with the Arya Samaj.
Father

His father’s side originally hailed from the northwest: Surinder Kapoor was born on December 23, 1925, in Peshawar, in what was then British India and is now Pakistan.
He moved to Mumbai from Peshawar after Partition, and before becoming a producer himself, he worked as a secretary to Shammi Kapoor, also serving his cousin Geeta Bali in that role.
He later produced Bollywood films and served as President of the Film & Television Producers Guild of India from 1995 to 2001, and passed away on 24 September 24, 2011 in Mumbai at age 85, following a cardiac arrest.
While the family is often linked to the legendary Kapoor acting dynasty, Surinder Kapoor was actually a cousin of Prithviraj Kapoor, making it a more distant connection than is sometimes assumed.
Mother
His mother was Nirmal Kapoor, who passed away on May 2, 2025, at the age of 90.
Siblings

Anil Kapoor has three siblings, all connected to the film industry.
His elder brother Boney Kapoor is a film producer, known for launching several major Hindi film franchises and for his marriages to producer Mona Shourie Kapoor and, later, the late actress Sridevi.
His younger brother Sanjay Kapoor is an actor, known for films such as Raja and Prem, and continues to work in Hindi cinema.
His sister Reena Kapoor Marwah stayed away from the film industry professionally and is married to Sandeep Marwah of Marwah Films & Video Studios in Noida.
