Akshay Kumar was born into a middle-class Punjabi Hindu family with ancestral roots in Amritsar, Punjab.
The family first lived in Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area before relocating to Mumbai’s Koliwada neighbourhood.

Akshay Kumar began his acting career through the film Aaj (1987), playing the role of a karate instructor.
He adopted his stage name ‘Akshay Kumar’ from the lead character of that film, inspired by actor Kumar Gaurav’s character ‘Akshay’.
He made his debut as a lead actor in the action film Saugandh (1991), opposite Raakhee and Shantipriya.
Then, he also appeared in Dancer.
In 1992, his breakthrough came with Khiladi, a suspense thriller. The film established him as an action star in Bollywood.
