Vikram Personal Life
Chiyaan Vikram maintains a notoriously low profile regarding his personal life; he has been married to psychologist Shailaja Balakrishnan since 1992.
Wife
Vikram’s wife is Shailaja Balakrishnan. She is a psychology teacher from Kerala, and she has mostly stayed away from regular media attention. She hails from the town of Thalassery in Kerala. Her family background consists largely of scholars and poets.
How Vikram and Shailaja Balakrishnan Met
She met Vikram in the late 1980s while he was recovering from a critical, life-threatening motorcycle accident. Vikram was on crutches and not yet a star when their relationship blossomed.
Marriage and Wedding Ceremonies
The couple married in 1992. Because they come from different religious backgrounds—Vikram is of mixed Christian-Hindu heritage, and Shailaja is Hindu—they held two ceremonies. They had a traditional mass wedding at the Guruvayoor Temple in Kerala and a church wedding at Loyola College in Chennai.
Children
Chiyaan Vikram and his wife, Shailaja Balakrishnan, have two children: a daughter named Akshita Vikram and a son named Dhruv Vikram.
- Akshita Vikram chooses to stay entirely out of the entertainment industry. In October 2017, she married her long-time boyfriend Manu Ranjith, the son of CavinKare Chairman C.K. Ranganathan. Manu is also the great-grandson of the late legendary Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.
- Dhruv Vikram, born on 23 September 1995, followed in his father’s footsteps to become an actor, playback singer, and lyricist in Tamil cinema. He made a highly anticipated acting debut with Adithya Varma (2019), the official Tamil remake of Arjun Reddy. Dhruv shared the screen directly with his father, Vikram, in the Karthik Subbaraj-directed action thriller Mahaan (2022), where they played on-screen father and son.
Father
Chiyaan Vikram’s father was John Albert Victor, popularly known by his screen name Vinod Raj.
He was a supporting actor in Tamil cinema and television serials. He was a native of Paramakudi in Tamil Nadu.
He belonged to a Tamil Christian background. Vinod Raj passed away on 31 December 2017 in Chennai at the age of 80 due to age-related health and heart issues.
Mother
Chiyaan Vikram’s mother is Rajeshwari, a retired high-ranking government official whose lineage connects Vikram directly to prominent film personalities.
She was an educated, high-achieving government officer who climbed the administrative ranks to retire at the prestigious position of Sub-Collector.
Siblings
Chiyaan Vikram is the eldest of three children and has two younger siblings, a brother named Arvind John Victor and a sister named Anitha Raj.
Unlike Vikram, both of his siblings have largely chosen to stay away from the glitz and glamour of the film industry.

Vikram Career

Vikram is an Indian film actor, voice actor, and playback singer. He made his debut in the 1990 film En Kadhal Kanmani, which was followed by a series of Tamil and Telugu films and supporting roles in a few Malayalam films throughout the early decade.
Television Debut and Early Modelling (1988 to 1989)
An aspiring actor since childhood, Vikram modelled for television commercials and appeared in a short film, hoping to get noticed by casting directors. He made his television debut with the Doordarshan series Galatta Kudumbam (1988). He also appeared in the television serial Siragugal during this early period, building his screen presence before receiving his first film opportunity.
Film Debut and Early Tamil Roles (1990 to 1992)
Vikram made his film debut in 1990 with En Kadhal Kanmani, a small-budget romantic film directed by T. K. Bose, opposite Rekha Nambiar. His next release was Sridhar’s Thanthu Vitten Ennai opposite Rohini, followed by a supporting role in Meera (1992), starring Revathi and Karthik. Despite regular early appearances, these Tamil films failed to gain major box office success, making his initial years in cinema a difficult phase.
Malayalam and Telugu Films and Dubbing Work (1993 to 1994)
Between 1993 and 1994, Vikram appeared in several supporting and lead roles across Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil cinema. He acted with Mammootty, Suresh Gopi, and Jayaram in Dhruvam, reunited with Suresh Gopi in Mafia, and worked again with Mammootty in Sainyam as an air cadet.
During the same period, he led the Telugu film Chirunavvula Varamistava, played one of Akkineni Nageswara Rao’s sons in Bangaru Kutumbam, and appeared in Vikraman’s Tamil film Pudhiya Mannargal. Alongside acting, he built a strong dubbing career, voicing Ajith Kumar in Amaravathi, Kadhal Desam, Paasamalargal, and Raasaiyya, and Abbas in VIP and I Have Found It.
Continuing South Indian Circuit (1995 to 1998)
In 1995, he made a brief appearance in Mani Ratnam’s landmark Hindi and Tamil bilingual Bombay. In 1993, he signed to work in Mani Ratnam’s film Bombay, but Vikram did not want to remove his beard, and so he could not do the project. Despite this, he later made a minor appearance in the film during this period.
He appeared in Ooha (1996) in Telugu, Street (1996) in Tamil, Indraprastham (1996) in Malayalam opposite Mohanlal, and Mayoora Nritham (1996) in Malayalam, maintaining his multi-language presence across South Indian cinema during this difficult phase of his career. He also dubbed for Ajith Kumar in Raasi (1997) and Kadhal Desam (1996). In 1997, he appeared in Ullaasam in Telugu and Kurolla Rajyam, and in 1998 in the Tamil film Kangalin Vaarthaigal.
Breakthrough with Sethu and the Birth of Chiyaan (1999)
In 1999, Vikram’s career took a major turn with Bala’s tragedy film Sethu, co-starring Jyothika and Abitha. He played Sethu, a volatile college student and rogue turned lover who suffers a severe psychological breakdown after a tragic romance. For the role, he shaved his head, lost 21 kg, and grew long nails, and after the film’s success, fans began calling him Chiyaan. Sethu is widely regarded as one of the greatest Tamil films ever made. The same year, he also appeared in House Full, playing Hamid in a supporting role.
Entering the New Decade with Multi-Language Roles (2000 to 2001)
In 2000, he appeared in Indriyam in Malayalam, playing a character role. He also appeared in 9 Nelalu in Telugu and dubbed for Abbas in the Tamil film Kandukondain Kandukondain, directed by Rajiv Menon alongside Aishwarya Rai, Mammootty, and Tabu, one of the most acclaimed Tamil films of that year.
In the early 2000s, Vikram appeared in a series of masala films, with Dhill (2001), Gemini (2002), Dhool (2003) and Saamy (2003) becoming commercially successful ventures. Dhill, directed by Dharani and featuring Laila Mehdi and Ashish Vidyarthi opposite Vikram, was released on 13 July 2001 and became one of the biggest Tamil commercial hits of that year, firmly re-establishing him as a leading commercial star in Tamil cinema. He also appeared in Youth (2001) in Telugu alongside Jayasudha and in the Red Indians (2001) film and Vinnukum Mannukum (2001). His performance in Kasi (2001) as a blind villager also earned critical praise during the same year, winning him his first Filmfare Award for Best Tamil Actor.
Critical Acclaim and Commercial Dominance (2002 to 2003)
In 2002, Vikram starred in Gemini with Kiran Rathod, Kalabhavan Mani, and Murali. Directed by Saran and produced by AVM Productions, the Chennai gang war film became a major commercial success. The same year, he appeared in Samurai as a Robin Hood-like figure, earning critical appreciation, and also acted in the Tamil film King.
2003 was the most critically significant year of his career to that point. In 2003, Vikram’s performance as a gravedigger with autism spectrum disorders in Bala’s Pithamagan saw him win the National Film Award for Best Actor, with his character only speaking a couple of lines of dialogue in the entire film. Pithamagan co-starred Suriya and was directed by Bala, becoming a landmark in Tamil parallel cinema. He also starred in Dhool, directed by Dharani, opposite Jyothika and Vivek, Saamy, directed by Hari, opposite Trisha Krishnan in her breakthrough role, and Kadhal Sadugudu, directed by Boopathy Pandian.
Arul and the Anniyan Phenomenon (2004 to 2005)
In 2004, he starred in Arul, directed by Hari, opposite Vadivelu and Jyothika, playing a man who acquires divine powers. The film became a commercial success and consolidated his position as one of Tamil cinema’s most bankable stars.
His appearance as an idealistic lawyer with multiple personality disorder in Shankar’s blockbuster Anniyan (2005) also won critical acclaim. Anniyan co-starred Sadha and Prakash Raj, featured music by Harris Jayaraj, and became one of the biggest Tamil blockbusters of that decade. He played three distinct personalities within a single character, a performance that is still studied for its technical range. He also appeared in Maja (2005) with Asin Thottumkal in Tamil and Telugu simultaneously. Vikram appeared in the Bollywood film Aparichit, which was the dubbed version of the Tamil film Anniyan, and Anniyan was also dubbed in French, the first Tamil film to do so.
Bheema and a Superhero First (2006 to 2009)
Vikram signed up for Bheema in October 2005, with the film facing severe delays and only releasing in January 2008. The film saw him portray Sekhar, who grows up idolising the gangster played by Prakash Raj. Despite mixed reviews for the overall film, his physical transformation and performance were individually praised by critics.
His next release, Kanthaswamy, directed by Susi Ganesan and also featuring Shriya Saran, became the first superhero film in Tamil cinema, with Vikram being featured as a vigilante. The film, which also starred Prabhu and Ashish Vidyarthi, was released on 21 August 2009 and received positive reviews while performing well commercially.
Mani Ratnam Collaboration and Dual Language Epic (2010)
In 2010, Vikram starred in Raavanan, directed by Mani Ratnam, a Tamil film simultaneously made in Hindi as Raavan with a parallel cast. The film stars Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and Prithviraj Sukumaran in the lead roles, along with a supporting cast led by Karthik, Prabhu, and Priyamani. Vikram played Veeraiya, the forest outlaw inspired by the Ramayana’s Ravana, while simultaneously playing the police officer Dev in the Hindi version Raavan. This was a rare case of an Indian actor playing two contrasting roles in the same story simultaneously across two language versions.
Deiva Thirumagal, Rajapattai, and Critical Comeback (2011)
In 2011, Vikram starred in Deiva Thirumagal, directed by A. L. Vijay, opposite Anushka Shetty, playing Krishna, a man with an intellectual disability who fights for custody of his daughter. For his role as a person with a developmental disability in the Tamil film Deiva Thirumagal (2011), he spent time with mentally challenged people for a month to get into the character. The film earned him the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actor South and widespread critical admiration for the depth and restraint of his performance.
He also appeared in Rajapattai (2011) directed by Boopathy Pandian opposite Deeksha Seth, playing police officer Anal Murugan. The action film gave him a high-voltage commercial appearance in the same year as his critically driven work in Deiva Thirumagal.
Thaandavam and a Unique Physical Challenge (2012)
In 2012, Vikram starred in Thaandavam, directed by Boopathy Pandian, opposite Amy Jackson and Anushka Shetty, playing a blind ex-army officer who fights a powerful antagonist. For his role as a blind man in the Tamil film Thaandavam, he did his training under human echolocation specialist Daniel Kish. This intensive preparation for the role demonstrated the same level of physical and psychological commitment he had shown in earlier performances like Sethu and Deiva Thirumagal.
David and Hindi Film Work (2013)
In 2013, he appeared in the Hindi film David as David, playing Sakku or Kirku Santa. David was a Tamil and Hindi bilingual directed by Bejoy Nambiar, featuring parallel storylines in different time periods. The Tamil version starred Jiiva and Tabu alongside Vikram in separate narrative threads. His appearance in the Hindi version gave him his most significant direct-to-Hindi film exposure since the dubbed success of Aparichit.
I and the Record-Breaking Physical Transformation (2015)
In 2015, Vikram starred in I (Ai) directed by S. Shankar opposite Amy Jackson and Suresh Gopi, produced on a budget of approximately 135 crore rupees, making it one of the most expensive Tamil films ever made at that time. For his three different looks in the Tamil film I in 2015, he shaved off his head and lost 25 kg of weight. For one look, he had to build a body like a bodybuilder. The film featured him as Lingesan, a bodybuilder who transforms into a deformed man seeking revenge, and became the highest-grossing Tamil film globally at the time of its release. He also appeared in 10 Endrathukulla (2015) directed by Vijay Milton opposite Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Pasupathy, playing James Bond in an action thriller.
Iru Mugan and Dual Role Return (2016)
In 2016, Vikram played dual roles in Iru Mugan, an action thriller involving intelligence operations, trafficking, and biological weapon threats. He also made a brief cameo as Durai in Velaikkaran in 2017.
Sketch and Saamy Square (2018)
In 2018, Vikram starred in Sketch, directed by Vijay Chandar, opposite Tamannaah Bhatia and Soori, released on 12 January 2018 for the Pongal season. The film was a Tamil action thriller that received mixed reviews commercially.
He also starred in Saamy Square (2018), directed by Hari, a sequel to the 2003 hit Saamy, opposite Keerthy Suresh and Aishwarya Rajesh, playing a dual role as a father and son cop. Saamy Square was released on 21 September 2018 to mixed reviews from critics and became a box office failure. Both 2018 releases were considered below the expected commercial and critical standards for a star of his stature.
Kadaram Kondan and Adithya Varma (2019)
In 2019, Vikram starred in Kadaram Kondan, directed by Rajesh M. Selva, opposite Akshara Haasan and Abi Hassan, playing the mysterious agent KK in an action thriller produced by his own production company. The film was released on Amazon Prime Video and received moderate reviews for its slick action presentation. He also appeared in Adithya Varma (2019) in a special appearance, the Tamil remake of the Telugu film Arjun Reddy.
Mahaan and the Father-Son On-Screen Pairing (2022)
In 2022, Vikram starred in Mahaan as Gandhi Mahaan, alongside his son Dhruv Vikram and Bobby Simha. The film was released on Amazon Prime Video and marked a notable on-screen father-son pairing in Tamil cinema.
He also starred in Cobra (2022), directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu, opposite Srinidhi Shetty and cricketer-turned-actor Irfan Pathan, playing a genius mathematician who assists assassinations across international locations. The film received mixed reviews despite its ambitious scope and visual ambition. He also appeared as Aditha Karikalan in Ponniyin Selvan: Part I (2022), directed by Mani Ratnam, alongside Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Trisha Krishnan, and Sobhita Dhulipala in the Tamil historical epic, which became the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2022.
Ponniyin Selvan: Part II and Dhruva Natchathiram (2023)
In 2023, Vikram reprised his role as Aditha Karikalan in Ponniyin Selvan: Part II, which helped the two-part series gross over ₹600 crore worldwide. He also appeared in the spy thriller Dhruva Natchathiram: Chapter One, Yuddha Kaandam.
Recent Work (2024 to 2025)
In 2024, Vikram starred in Thangalaan, directed by Pa. Ranjith, released on 15 August 2024. The film stars Vikram in five roles, along with Pasupathy, Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, and Daniel Caltagirone. Set during the British Raj era, a fierce tribal leader sets out to stop an apparent sorceress after earning her wrath when assisting a British general in tracing gold in their village. The film grossed approximately 72 to 100 crore rupees worldwide. The directorial cut of Thangalaan was selected for the Limelight Section at the 54th International Film Festival of Rotterdam 2025, and national award-winning critic and festival curator Meenakshi Shedde stated that Vikram is mesmerising as Thangalaan and gives his all to the role.
In 2025, Vikram starred as Kaali in Veera Dheera Sooran: Part 2, directed by S. U. Arun Kumar. The film, released on 27 March 2025, earned around ₹70 crore worldwide and received praise for its neo-noir style and Vikram’s grounded performance.
Upcoming Work (2026 and Beyond)
Vikram has several confirmed projects in various stages of development for release in 2026 and beyond.
Mahavir Karna, a mythological epic in which Vikram plays the role of Karna from the Mahabharata, is one of his most anticipated confirmed upcoming projects. The film is expected to be one of the largest-scale Tamil productions ever mounted, with Vikram preparing for the role with the same physical and research-driven intensity he has brought to his most acclaimed performances.
Dhruva Natchathiram, the full version of the spy thriller directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, remains one of the most awaited Tamil films still awaiting a complete release, with its second chapter yet to be formally announced for theatrical premiere.

Vikram Controversies
Vikram has mostly maintained a respected public image in the film industry. However, a few film-related issues connected to projects involving Vikram have received public attention.
Varmaa Creative Dispute
One widely reported issue was related to Varmaa, the planned Tamil remake of Arjun Reddy and the debut film of Vikram’s son Dhruv Vikram. Reports said that Vikram and the makers were unhappy with director Bala’s version of the film, which led to that version being shelved. The project was later remade and released as Adithya Varma.
Veera Dheera Sooran Release Issue
Vikram’s film Veera Dheera Sooran also faced release-related trouble when legal issues reportedly delayed some shows. The matter involved a dispute between B4U and the production side, not a personal allegation against Vikram.
Dhruva Natchathiram Delay
Another film linked with Vikram, Dhruva Natchathiram, remained delayed for years because of production, financial, and legal complications. Reports around the film focused mainly on director Gautham Vasudev Menon and the production challenges behind the release.
Public Twitter Feud with Rana Daggubati
In an old media interview, Vikram made a casual remark analysing the career shifts of contemporary actors, specifically referencing Telugu star Rana Daggubati.
Vikram was quoted as saying, “Look at Rana. He started in the Telugu industry and came to Bollywood, but he hadn’t made any headway in the South. Now he’s not burdened by the Telugu industry.” Rana Daggubati hit back fiercely on Twitter, tweeting to Vikram that he should focus on his own career, which Rana claimed was facing “10 odd disasters”.
Realising the statement had been twisted out of context, Vikram personally called Rana to clear the air. Rana later publicly apologised to Vikram and his fans on Twitter, confirming it was a media misquote.
