Fondly called “Thala” (meaning Leader in Tamil) by his fans worldwide, Ajith has starred in over 63 films and is widely regarded as one of Tamil cinema’s greatest superstars.

After dropping out of school, he worked a variety of jobs, first as an apprentice mechanic at an Enfield company.

Then, at a family friend’s garment export firm, he eventually rose to become a business developer. 

He also briefly co-ran a textiles business before pivoting to modelling. 

It was his modelling work that eventually caught the attention of cinematographer P. C. Sreeram, who encouraged him to pursue acting. 

With minimal formal training, Ajith entered Tamil cinema in the early 1990s and went on to become one of its biggest superstars.

Screen Debut in En Veedu En Kanavar (1990)

Ajith made his very first screen appearance in the 1990 Tamil romantic drama En Veedu En Kanavar, in a brief one-scene appearance as a school child.

His First Lead Role in 1993

Through the recommendation of legendary playback singer S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, whose son S. P. Charan was a classmate of Ajith’s. 

He was cast in his first lead role in the Telugu romantic drama Prema Pusthakam with Kanchan. 

However, the film’s production was halted following the director’s tragic death.
